I've learned that love brings a sense of security and peace—when you're genuinely in love, you don't feel anxious about constant attention or validation. Instead, you trust your partner and the space between you both. Attachment, on the other hand, tends to quietly create anxiety. I remember feeling needy when I was overly attached; my mood would spike or plummet based on my partner's texts or attention. This kind of emotional rollercoaster is draining and unsustainable. Another revealing aspect is how love and attachment view reality differently. Love accepts and respects your partner as they are now, appreciating their present self without demanding they fulfill potential that may never materialize. Attachment often clings to who someone could be in the future, creating unrealistic expectations and disappointment. Healthy relationships are also characterized by boundaries and respect for individual identity. Attachment can make you fearful of losing yourself, leading to abandoned goals or friendships, just to maintain the relationship. Love supports individuality, allowing both partners to grow together without losing themselves. Finally, a crucial self-reflective question helps me: "If nothing changed in this relationship over the next five years, would I still choose it wholeheartedly?" If the answer hesitates or feels based on fear of starting over rather than genuine desire, it’s worth exploring the possibility of attachment. Understanding these distinctions has empowered me to build stronger, more fulfilling relationships while fostering self-love and respect. Recognizing whether you’re in love or attached helps you choose relationships that truly nourish your soul, leading to lasting happiness.
