How Men Actually Like to Be Flirted With (According to Relationship Psychology)

Flirting doesn’t have to stop after marriage.

In fact, many men aren’t looking for grand romantic gestures—they’re looking for small moments that make them feel chosen, appreciated, admired, and desired.

A genuine compliment.

A lingering touch.

A playful smile.

A thoughtful text.

A few minutes of undivided attention.

These simple habits can help keep emotional and romantic connection alive long after the honeymoon phase.

... Read moreFrom personal experience, I’ve found that the little things really do make the biggest difference when it comes to flirting with your partner, especially in long-term relationships. Men, like women, crave genuine connection and appreciation, but often in more understated ways. For example, sending a spontaneous text that says, "I’ve been thinking about you today," can brighten his whole day and remind him that he’s valued. I also realized that specific compliments had a stronger impact than generic ones. Rather than simply saying, "You look nice," pointing out a particular detail like, "I love how confident you look in that shirt today," made him feel genuinely seen and appreciated. Similarly, affectionate touch—such as holding his hand unexpectedly or leaning on his shoulder while watching TV—created a deep sense of closeness without needing words. Playing around with playful teasing or sharing a private joke between us kept the spark alive and added fun to everyday moments. Men respond well to playful confidence because it breaks routine and builds chemistry. More importantly, when he feels fully listened to without rushing to fix things during conversations, our emotional connection grew even stronger. Just being present and showing that his thoughts matter has a powerful effect. Overall, these small gestures—simple compliments, affectionate touches, playful smiles, thoughtful texts, and active listening—combine to make men feel chosen, admired, and deeply connected. This approach aligns with relationship psychology principles showing that emotional intimacy thrives on feeling understood and valued. Flirting doesn’t have to be elaborate; it’s the consistent, purposeful little things that nurture lasting love and attraction over time.
