Your Marriage Isn’t “Fine” If You’re Living in the Middle Circle 👀

Sometimes disconnection doesn’t look like screaming, cheating, or a marriage falling apart.

Sometimes it looks like shorter conversations. Less affection. Feeling misunderstood. Avoiding the hard stuff. Slowly becoming really good roommates instead of connected partners.

The good news? Disconnection is a pattern—and patterns can change. ❤️

Look at the three circles.

Which one feels most familiar in your marriage right now?

Save this for your next relationship check-in & send it to someone who needs it. 💍

... Read moreIn many marriages, disconnection doesn't always show up as overt conflicts or dramatic issues like cheating or constant fights. Instead, it often creeps in quietly through subtle shifts—shorter conversations, less affection, or feeling misunderstood. This is especially true when couples find themselves stuck in what the three circles framework calls the "middle circle" of disconnection, marked by opinions, resentment, and avoiding hard conversations. From personal experience and observing others, the journey from disconnect to reconnection requires awareness and intentional effort. One strategy I've found helpful is regularly checking in with your partner using clear markers from the "three circles" model. Are you experiencing defensiveness or avoidance? Are conversations becoming transactional rather than emotionally rich? These signs often reveal you're in the middle circle, which is deceptively challenging because it feels like everything is "fine" on the surface while deeper issues simmer below. To rebuild, focusing on moving into the "inner circle" is key. This involves cultivating honest and intentional communication, practicing vulnerability even when it's uncomfortable, and prioritizing quality time free from distractions like phones or work. Creating emotional safety by appreciating each other's efforts and listening without judgment fosters a stronger bond. Another helpful tip is to consciously avoid keeping score or letting stress dictate interactions. Instead, try to reframe conflicts as opportunities for growth rather than threats. I've noticed that couples who embrace this mindset tend to experience less resentment and more connection. Ultimately, understanding these circles helps recognize that disconnection is not irreversible. Patterns can change with commitment and active repair. If you feel your marriage is stuck in the middle circle, know that taking small, consistent steps toward open conversations, vulnerability, and affection can gradually restore the closeness you desire. Sharing this framework with your partner might be the first step toward a healthier, more connected marriage.

I think there should be another ring. My partner and I are older and are only together because of the dogs. Sounds stupid, but it’s a real thing. We don’t do anything together and I don’t want to. We have separate bedrooms and only speak when absolutely necessary and mostly about our 3 dogs. No physical touch/sex for a couple of years. I am not attracted to him at all. I go to bed at 6:00pm to watch TV or play on the phone and try to be asleep as fast as I can. There’s nothing to be awake for. I’m very comfortable being by myself. He makes the house payment and I cook dinner and do his laundry. So I guess it’s an arrangement.. I dunno..
