🏚️ No Capital: Life in Katwe

Fiona was born in the Catwe slum.

One of the poorest areas in Kampala, Uganda.

She had to drop out of school at a young age.

The family has almost no stable place to live.

And still have to make a living by selling corn by the side of the road.

Does everything look hopeless?

Until 2005, she accidentally walked through a small community development center.

With an old chess table with a volunteer teacher.

Which... became the gateway of opportunity that changed her life forever.

Fiona learned the rules so quickly that it was shocking.

You practice every day, even if you're hungry, even if you're tired, you never retreat.

Until the craft brought her onto the national and international stage.

Became Uganda's number one female chess player.

And represented the national team racing Chess Olympiad 4 times.
