Daily braid 5, oiled up for the beach!
Oh, the joys of a beach day! Sun, sand, and sparkling water… but let's be honest, our hair often takes a beating. That's why I've fallen in love with the 'oiled braid' – it's been my ultimate secret weapon for keeping my hair happy and healthy while looking effortlessly chic on every beach adventure. You might be wondering, why an oiled braid specifically? Well, for me, it’s a brilliant way to protect my strands from the harsh elements. The sun can be incredibly drying, and saltwater can leave hair feeling brittle and tangled. By gently coating my hair with a nourishing oil before braiding, I create a protective barrier that locks in moisture and fends off frizz, even in humid coastal air. When it comes to choosing an oil, I usually reach for something lightweight yet effective. Coconut oil is a classic for a reason – it smells amazing and is fantastic for deep conditioning. I also love argan oil for its shine-boosting properties and how easily it absorbs without leaving a greasy residue. Jojoba oil is another great option, especially if you have a sensitive scalp, as it mimics our hair's natural sebum. My routine is simple: I warm a small amount of oil in my palms, then evenly distribute it through my damp or dry hair, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. A little goes a long way, you don't want to overdo it! Once my hair is prepped, it's time for the 'beach braid' itself. While a simple three-strand braid works wonders, I'm a huge fan of the Dutch braid for the beach. It lays flat against the head, which means fewer flyaways and a more secure style that can withstand swimming and ocean breezes. To create a Dutch braid, you start like a French braid but cross the strands under the middle section instead of over. This makes the braid pop out more, giving it a really defined and stylish look. I often do two Dutch braids for a sporty yet cute vibe, or a single one down my back for a more bohemian feel. If Dutch braids aren't your thing, a classic French braid, fishtail braid, or even simple pigtail braids are fantastic choices. The key is to keep it neat and secure so it stays put throughout your beach day activities. Beyond the protection, I find that braiding my hair before hitting the sand also prevents tangles. There’s nothing worse than trying to detangle salty, windblown hair after a long day! When I take out my oiled braid at the end of the day, my hair usually feels soft, has lovely waves, and is much easier to manage. It's a win-win: I get a cute, practical hairstyle for the day, and my hair gets a deep conditioning treatment. Give it a try on your next beach trip – your hair will thank you for it!
