Should I break up?🍋

I’m 31 now, and 4 years ago, I became paralyzed due to a spinal cord injury. It was a huge disaster for us.

We’ve been together for over 10 years, starting from high school. We went through long-distance during college, built a company together, experienced its failure, and started over. We even built a home together.

Of course, we’ve faced a lot of challenges along the way. So when I got sick, we just saw it as another trial of fate—though it turned out to be harder than we imagined. But last year, I managed to start walking again. Haha, sorry, going off track—that’s not the main point.

I want to know, if you were me, would you choose to break up?

Here in China, many people believe that if someone becomes seriously ill, they should be the one to suggest breaking up as a way to “love” the other person. I think that’s just something people get brainwashed into by TV dramas, thinking it’s noble or great.

But to me, love is between two people. I wouldn’t make such a big decision for both of us on my own. To be honest, I don’t think that kind of unilateral decision is noble at all.

Also, think about this—problems from 10 years ago probably don’t feel so hard now, do they? In the same way, I feel like how we handle this depends on how the other person feels, too. A good partner, in my opinion, is someone who allows their partner to have choices, no matter what their own situation is.

What do you think? 👀

... Read moreIt’s truly A BIG QUESTION that has weighed heavily on my heart, and to be honest, talking about it brings up a lot of emotions. The idea of "breakup pain" isn't just about a potential future ending; it's about the pain of even contemplating tearing apart a decade of shared life, dreams, and resilience. I look back at photos of us, from young students in school uniforms taking silly mirror selfies to us as a smiling couple holding oranges, and it’s hard to reconcile those joyful memories with the profound sadness that this current dilemma casts over us. When I first found myself in a hospital room, with nurses in black t-shirts and gloves attending to me, and eventually seeing my partner supporting me, even when he wore a neck brace after an unrelated incident, I never imagined this question would follow. We’ve navigated so many storms – from the anxieties of long-distance during college, the exhilaration of starting a company, to the heartbreak of its failure, and then rebuilding a home together. Each challenge, we faced as a unit. Now, this spinal injury feels like the ultimate test, not just of our bodies, but of our very souls and the fabric of our relationship. There’s a silent, persistent ache that comes with this kind of decision. It’s not the dramatic, crying-into-a-pillow kind of sadness often depicted in "sad girl images" online. It's a deeper, more existential pain. It’s the constant internal debate, the fear of making the wrong choice, and the immense love that makes letting go, or even considering it, almost unbearable. I hear the whispers of societal expectations, the idea that I should bravely step aside to spare him, but it feels like a betrayal of everything we've built. Love, to me, isn't about unilateral sacrifice; it's about shared burdens and shared decisions. How do you cope with this kind of uncertainty? Some days, I find myself just trying to breathe, trying to remember the strength we’ve always found in each other. It’s about being brutally honest with myself and with him, acknowledging that while my situation has changed, the core of our connection might not have. It’s about understanding that pain, in all its forms, is part of life, and sometimes the greatest love isn't about avoiding pain, but about navigating it together, even when the path is unclear. This isn't just my journey anymore; it's *ours*, and any decision, especially one as monumental as this, must truly reflect both our hearts and our futures, not just a noble ideal from a TV drama. What comforts me most is knowing that we've always faced things together, and this, harrowing as it is, will be no different. The question remains, but so does our shared history and the possibility of a future, whatever its form.
