I’d been eagerly awaiting the opening of CATZEN CAT CAFE in St. Paul, MN, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! As a huge cat lover, finding a place that perfectly blends a fantastic coffee shop with a loving environment for felines is a dream come true. My first visit was everything I hoped for and more. Stepping into Catzen, the first thing I noticed was the incredible aroma of fresh coffee mixed with that comforting, subtle scent of a clean, well-maintained cat space – a truly unique and inviting combination! I grabbed a delicious latte from their friendly baristas, and the café area itself is so beautifully designed with its mid-century modern vibes, making it a wonderful spot to relax even before meeting the cats. The cozy fireplace adds such a warm, inviting touch, making it feel like a home away from home, or as I like to think of it, a dream library with a feline twist. But the true magic unfolds when you step into ‘The Den’. I was a bit nervous at first, as some cat cafes can feel overwhelming or stressed for the animals, but the resident cats here are incredibly well-adjusted, playful, and affectionate. I spent a wonderful hour just watching them chase toys, nap in sunbeams, and even got some purrs and head-nuzzles from a sweet ginger cat named Oliver (I'm giving them a name for context!). They seemed so happy and well-cared for, which is a huge testament to the staff’s dedication and the thought put into their welfare. For those who prefer to admire from afar, 'The Lab' is a genius idea. I saw a few people comfortably working on their laptops, occasionally glancing up to watch the feline antics through the glass walls. It creates an inclusive atmosphere for all cat lovers, even those with allergies or who just want a quieter experience while still enjoying the cat ambiance. What really struck me was the spontaneous conversations among patrons. I found myself chatting with another visitor about their own rescue cat, sharing stories and photos – it felt less like a coffee shop and more like a warm gathering of like-minded individuals, all united by their love for cats. A huge tip for weekend visits: definitely check their website for the reservation system. I saw a few disappointed people turned away, so planning ahead is key, especially if you want to guarantee your time in The Den. They also have specific kid-friendly hours, which is fantastic for families – it ensures a calm environment for everyone, both human and feline. On weekdays, my understanding is your café purchase acts as your entry to The Den. I opted for a pastry along with my coffee, and it was a seamless process. It's a great way to support the cafe and get your cat fix simultaneously. I’d recommend going during off-peak hours if you want more one-on-one time with the cats, perhaps a weekday morning right after they open. Catzen isn’t just a coffee shop; it’s a sanctuary where you can truly connect with animals and people. It’s quickly become one of my favorite spots in St. Paul, MN, and I can't recommend this CATZEN CAT CAFE experience enough. I'm already looking forward to my next visit!
