Must haves for a new fur baby!!

I am in no way a cat expert but I do have A LOT of experience working with cats and taking care of them. When inviting a new cat into your home, it can be quite exciting but you must make sure you have appropriate supplies to keep your furry friend happy. This post is to explain the basics you’ll need and why you need them.

🥣Food Bowls🥣

Wide and Flat: When it comes to cat food bowls, you want to look for something wide rimmed or flatter. This is because cats can suffer from whisker fatigue if their whiskers are touching the edges of a bowl for too long. They will stop eating because the base of their whiskers contain tons of sensory receptors that will be stimulated and cause an overwhelming sensation.

Elevated: Having an elevated food bow is better for digestion while eating. Cats don’t have to bend down as far to eat and therefore feel more comfortable. Just make sure the bowl isn’t too tall if you have a shorter cat.

💦Water Fountain💦

Flowing Water: For some reason many cats prefer running water over still water and will be more likely to drink it if it’s moving. Hydration is very important for a cat’s diet as it helps decrease the chance of UTIs.

Filtered: Many water fountains for pets have built in filters which will remove any toxins and nasty stuff in your pets’ water.

🪀Toy Springs🪀

Cats LOVE these things! Because they are springs, their movements are more dramatic than other toys so your cat will love chasing these around the house. Just be prepared to find springs under all your furniture.

💃Cat Dancers💃

These simple toys are cheap and loved by cats everywhere. It’s such a simple little toy too! These are great but any toy that is attached to a “stick” is an excellent option to play with your cat. It is fun to watch them and you don’t have to worry about getting your hand all scratched and bitten up. Cats are naturally hunters so they need to pounce and hunt and “kill prey” which is exactly what these toys provide.

🍌Catnip Banana Kicker🍌

A rule of thumb for catnip toys is if you can’t smell catnip, there either isn’t enough, it’s expired, or there is none in the toy. The banana kickers are a cat favorite and also give a good show watching your cat go nuts with it.

💩Litter Genie💩

I hate throwing cat poop in a normal trash can because some people don’t use a trash bag and you don’t know when it’ll get taken out. It smells and it’s nasty. The Litter Genie has a hatch that you pull open to discard the excrement then it springs closed to keep the smell locked in and traps the bacteria and nastiness that comes with cat pee and poop. It also comes with a litter scoop and pail for easy, clean storage. There are specific bags you get for it that make the process of taking the trash out so much easier. I highly recommend this.

🗼Cat Tower🗼

Cats need places to climb. They need to feel like they have a safe place from the world and where they can observe everything going on. Many cat towers also offer scratch posts for cats to scratch instead of your furniture.

💩Stainless Steel Litter Box💩

Most pet stores only sell plastic litter boxes which are fine for the most part. The downside to them is that they retain bacteria and the cat pee smell due to the porous surface of plastic. Stainless steel is not only easier to clean but it also does not retain smell nearly as much as plastic does. They are a little pricier than plastic but the lack of cat pee odor makes up for it.

🥄Cat Food Spoons🥄

The simple explanation is that I don’t want to use my silverware to dish out my cat’s food. Yes, I can wash them but for some reason it kind of gives me the ick knowing that my spoons might still have residue from human food that I shouldn’t be giving to my cat or visa versa. They also make it easier to control portion sizes since they are smaller.
