Want beautiful hydrangea blooms?

If you have hydrangeas, spring is the time to fertilize them! Here’s how to do it! As always, make sure to check your soil for its existing acid level.

2024/4/16 Edited to

... Read moreHey fellow plant lovers! You know how much I adore my hydrangeas, especially seeing them burst into glorious bloom. My original post touched on the importance of spring fertilizing, and it truly is a game-changer! But there's so much more to unlocking their full potential, whether you’re dreaming of a lush white hydrangea garden border or vibrant bushes by your front door. First, let's dive a little deeper into that spring fertilization. After you've done your soil test – which is crucial for understanding what your hydrangeas truly need – you can choose the right fertilizer. For most bigleaf (macrophylla) and oakleaf hydrangeas, a balanced slow-release granular fertilizer (like 10-10-10 or 15-30-15 if you want to encourage more blooms) is perfect. I usually apply it around the drip line of the plant as new growth starts appearing in early spring. Remember to water it in well! If your soil test shows a high pH and you want those classic blue hydrangeas (for those varieties that change color), you might add a soil acidifier. For white hydrangeas, pH typically doesn't affect color, so focus on overall plant health. But fertilizing is just one piece of the puzzle! To truly make your hydrangeas thrive, especially those in a shade garden border that might struggle, consistent care is key. Hydrangeas are thirsty plants, especially during hot summer months and when they are actively blooming. I make sure to water deeply a few times a week, rather than shallowly every day. My tip? Stick your finger about an inch or two into the soil; if it feels dry, it's time to water! Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and keeps weeds at bay, which is a lifesaver in my border plantings. Pruning can also impact blooming. For most bigleaf and oakleaf hydrangeas, which bloom on old wood, I only prune out dead or weak branches in late winter/early spring. If you have Endless Summer or other reblooming varieties, you can deadhead spent blooms throughout the season to encourage more flowers. Panicle hydrangeas (like 'Limelight' or 'Quick Fire'), which bloom on new wood, can be pruned more heavily in late winter or early spring to shape them or control their size – they're fantastic for front of house plantings as they often tolerate more sun! Speaking of placement, hydrangeas are incredibly versatile for landscaping. For that stunning white hydrangea garden border, consider varieties like 'Annabelle' (smooth hydrangea) or 'Little Lime' (panicle hydrangea) – they offer consistent white blooms and are relatively low-maintenance. If you have a shady spot, bigleaf hydrangeas are your best bet, but ensure they still get some dappled morning sun for optimal blooming. For a dramatic front of house display, I love using a 'Quick Fire' panicle hydrangea for its early blooms and beautiful fall color, or a classic 'Endless Summer' for continuous flowers. And for those looking to create a truly enchanting border, don't forget companion plants! I love pairing my white hydrangeas with hostas for contrasting foliage in shade, or with delicate astilbes for feathery blooms. In sunnier spots, consider lady's mantle (Alchemilla mollis) or even some low-growing catmint (Nepeta) for a beautiful, harmonious look. These companions not only fill in gaps but also create a layered effect that makes your hydrangea border truly pop. Caring for hydrangeas is so rewarding, and with these extra tips, I hope you're inspired to get out there and help your bushes achieve their most beautiful blooms ever. Happy gardening!
