How I keep some of my plants from spreading

I hear it frequently from so many: “That plant takes over!” If you want to enjoy your favorite plant but want to keep it in check, you need to prevent it from reseeding. Here’s how I do that!

2024/9/3 Edited to

... Read moreDealing with plants that just love to take over can be a real headache, right? I totally get it! While the original article touched on how crucial it is to prevent reseeding to keep your garden in check, sometimes those abundant beauties have other plans. It’s not always just about the seeds; many vigorous plants have clever ways of spreading their charm (or chaos!) throughout your garden beds. One common culprit is plants that spread via runners or stolons. Think strawberries, mint, or even some groundcovers like creeping phlox. These send out horizontal stems above or just below the soil surface, forming new plantlets along the way. If you’re not careful, a small patch of mint can become an entire mint forest in a single season! My secret to managing these? For mint, I’ve learned the hard way that growing it in a container, even burying the container in the ground, is the absolute best way to prevent it from venturing where it’s not wanted. For strawberries, I try to direct the runners back into their designated patch or snip them off if they're heading for my prize petunias. Regular checks are key. Then there are rhizomatous plants – these are even sneakier! They spread underground via modified stems, and before you know it, what started as a small clump of bamboo or some ornamental grasses can pop up feet away. My personal experience with a beautiful but aggressive ornamental grass taught me the value of physical barriers. Installing a root barrier around particularly enthusiastic spreaders can save you a lot of future digging. It's a bit of work upfront, but trust me, it pays off when you’re not constantly battling its underground invasion. Another strategy I swear by, especially for plants that truly are abundant and just keep growing, is regular division. Many perennials, like hostas or daylilies, benefit from being dug up and divided every few years. Not only does this keep them from becoming too massive and suffocating neighboring plants, but it also rejuvenates the plant, leading to healthier growth and more blooms. It’s like giving them a fresh start! I usually do this in spring or fall, and it’s a fantastic way to get 'free' plants to fill in other parts of your garden or share with friends. Of course, the original point about preventing reseeding remains incredibly important. For plants like cosmos, calendula, or even some herbs that self-sow profusely, deadheading them religiously before their seeds mature is a game-changer. I personally love the look of a full plant, but I’ve learned to sacrifice a few spent blooms to avoid weeding out hundreds of seedlings later. Sometimes, I’ll let just a few go to seed if I want a naturalized look or a specific patch of volunteers, but it’s always a controlled choice. Finally, soil health and proper spacing play a huge role. An extremely fertile bed might encourage some plants to be too abundant. And giving plants enough space from the get-go can reduce competition and make it easier to monitor any spreading tendencies. It's all part of creating a balanced and beautiful garden where every plant has its place without overwhelming its neighbors. It took me years to learn these tricks, but now my garden feels much more manageable, even with all my favorite vigorous growers!
