Day 18: Are you cheap⁉️

So I found an article abt 15 signs that you’re a cheapskate & thought that I would post a few of them. Some of these signs I can actually relate to. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with saving money & setting a budget but some of these things are down right outrageous 🤣🤣🤣 #Respectfully

1: You sneak refreshments into the movies - I actually disagree with this statement lol I think this is genius!! Why pay $8 for a snack when you can pay $1.25 at Dollar Tree. I think buying refreshments at the movies outside of popcorn is a waste of money personally 🤣🤣🤣

2: You don’t leave a tip - Not leaving a tip bc you received bad service is one thing. But not to tip when you received great service is diabolical 🤨🤪 your 💀 wrong for that‼️

3: You ONLY do free activities - I’m a mom of 6 children so I often try to find free fun but I’m also willing to pay for fun things to do as well! But refusing to go to an event bc there’s a fee is a different story 😒😒

4: You reuse paper goods - There is absolutely no way that you should be reusing paper plates, cups & paper towels for several days…. Like how is this even possible?? 🧐

5: You don’t pay your fair share - If we spilt the bill evenly you have a problem with that. Or you conveniently forgot your card!!! Ok we have Zelle, PayPal, CashApp, Apple Pay & Venmo!!! Nice try tho 😉🤣🤣

6: You regift items - Ok I’m good for reusing gift bags & giving something away that I have no use for!! But I’m not gonna lie one of my kids bought me a large spa gift set for Christmas one year & I don’t like the smell of Vanilla so I regifted it to my sons Preschool Teacher for Christmas 🤣🤣🤣 but that was a one time thing I was never gonna use the gift set!!

7: You constantly complain abt the prices of everything - I have a old classmate that will literally order a kids meal & upsize the drink n fries bc she refuses to pay for an adult meal 🫤🫤. If you’re not that hungry & wanna just grab a quick bite a kids meal is understandable. Please don’t argue with the restaurant staff over the prices of everything there’s absolutely nothing she/he can do abt the prices‼️

8: You always snagging all the leftovers - There’s absolutely nothing wrong with taking “one” to go plate! But to load up all the leftovers bc you now don’t have to buy groceries for the rest of the week is ridiculous 🥴😩😩😩

What’s are some other signs that your cheap that didn’t make the list???

Can you relate to any of these statements???

Are you cheap or do you know someone else who is??

2024/9/5 Edited to

... Read moreAfter reading through that list of signs, it really got me thinking about where the line is between being smart with money and being, well, a cheapskate. I mean, we all want to save a buck, right? Especially with prices soaring these days. But some habits can definitely cross over from savvy to stingy. For me, it's about intent and impact. Is my money-saving tactic causing inconvenience or disrespect to others, or is it just smart planning? Being frugal, to me, means making conscious choices to save money without compromising quality or integrity. It’s bringing your own snacks to the movies because you planned ahead and packed them, not sneaking refreshments into the movies like it’s a covert operation to avoid paying. It’s reusing a beautiful gift bag or ribbon, but regifting an unwanted item to someone who might recognize it or get the wrong impression? That feels different. The point about not leaving tips really stuck with me. Having worked in service before, I know how much those tips matter. While bad service is one thing (and sometimes warrants a lower tip or a conversation with management), consistently stiffing someone who worked hard is just not cool. It's a small act that speaks volumes about respect for others' time and effort. Then there's the talk about *reusing paper goods*. While I've definitely tried to stretch the life out of a Ziploc bag or parchment paper, reusing paper plates or towels for days seems a bit extreme! The key is hygiene and common sense. And *complaining about prices of everything*? We all feel the pinch, but constantly grumbling or arguing with staff can be a real mood killer for everyone around you. It’s often better to find alternatives or adjust your budget than to make everyone else uncomfortable. I’ve also seen how these habits can affect relationships. When someone consistently doesn't pay their fair share when splitting a bill, or is always snagging all the leftovers without considering others, it can breed resentment. True frugality often respects boundaries and values relationships over pinching every single penny. It’s about balance. So, how can we be financially savvy without veering into cheapskate territory? I try to focus on value. Is this purchase truly necessary? Can I get a better deal without sacrificing quality or ethical considerations? Planning meals to avoid waste, using coupons strategically, and looking for free activities together (not just for yourself) are all great ways to save without being cheap. It’s about being mindful and considerate, not just about accumulating savings at any cost. Ultimately, it’s a journey to find the balance that works for you and your finances, while still being a good friend, family member, and patron. What are your thoughts on where frugality ends and cheapness begins?
