If you've recently found some shelves and are planning to restore and personalize them, it's great to start by thoroughly cleaning the surfaces, just like wiping them down with Clorox wipes to remove dust and germs. When it comes to assembling shelves, the little plastic pieces you're referring to are commonly called "shelf support pegs" or "shelf pins." These small fixtures fit into the holes on the sides of the shelving unit and hold the shelf boards in place securely. They come in various materials, but plastic is typical for lightweight furniture. Before painting, ensure the shelves are completely dry after cleaning. Light sanding is recommended to create a rough surface that paint can adhere to better, especially if you're painting over a glossy or sealed surface. For painting shelves, consider using chalk paint for a matte, vintage look without needing primer. If you want a more durable finish, especially for shelves that will hold heavier items, latex-based or oil-based enamel paints are good choices. Oil-based paints tend to be tougher but take longer to dry and have stronger fumes, so make sure to work in a well-ventilated area.
