SUMMER SCHEDULE CHECKLIST

Do you follow routines and rhythms or do you plan as you go?
Summer is here, and for many of us moms, that means a complete shift in routine! Gone are the school bells and structured days, replaced by the exciting, yet sometimes overwhelming, prospect of open-ended summer days. As a mom navigating summer with multiple children, I've learned that having a "summer daily rhythm" is an absolute game-changer for "simplifying summer break" and ensuring "how to have a good summer" for everyone. Instead of a rigid schedule that can feel restrictive, we embrace a rhythm. This means we have a flow to our day, but there's plenty of room for spontaneity and adapting to what each day brings. This approach is particularly helpful if you have children who thrive on predictability, perhaps even offering an "ADHD friendly" structure without feeling imprisoned by a clock. It provides comfort and reduces anxiety for kids, like a 10-year-old, who might otherwise feel adrift during the long break. Our mornings usually kick off with a consistent "WAKE UP + BREAKFAST" time. While it's tempting to let everyone sleep in until noon, a relatively consistent wake-up helps regulate sleep cycles and ensures we have ample time for activities. After breakfast, while I'm busy with "PACK LUNCHES," the kids usually enjoy some "free play." This is my secret weapon for productivity – they're engaged, and I can tackle essential tasks without constant interruptions. Following this, we have a quick "TINY TIDY" session, usually just "10 MIN TIDY" to put away pajamas and make beds. It sets a positive tone for the day. Next up is to "GET READY FOR THE DAY." Even if we're not going anywhere special, getting dressed and brushing teeth signals a transition from relaxation to being ready for whatever the day holds. The bulk of our morning is dedicated to an "OUTDOOR ACTIVITY." This could be anything from a trip to the park, a walk around the neighborhood, or simply playing in the backyard. Getting fresh air and burning off energy is crucial for everyone's well-being. We also love visiting the "POOL" when the weather is warm enough, which is a fantastic way to cool down and get some exercise. "BACK HOME" around lunchtime, we transition into "NAP OR QUIET TIME." Even if the older kids don't nap, quiet time is non-negotiable. This allows everyone to recharge, read books, do puzzles, or engage in individual play. For me, it's a precious window to catch a breath or get a few things done. After "NAP TIME WAKE UP," we often head "TIME OUTSIDE (backyard)" again or engage in some indoor creative play before it's time to "PREP DINNER - DINNER." We try to involve the kids in dinner prep when possible, which makes mealtime feel more like a "FAMILY EDMON" (family edition) experience. Evenings are all about winding down. "SHOWER. BATH TIME" helps wash away the day's adventures. We then have about "30 MIN TV TIME" which serves a dual purpose: the kids get some screen time, and I can "close the kitchen + living" spaces, tidying up before I'm done for the night. By a certain time, everyone is "IN BED BY A" pre-determined hour. This consistent bedtime is key to ensuring they're rested and ready for another day of summer fun. Finally, it's "TIME TO RELAX AND UNWIND FOR THE DAY" for me, knowing the house is quiet and the rhythm held strong. This "summer vacation routine" isn't about being rigid; it's about creating anchors in the day that provide structure and predictability. It allows for flexibility when opportunities arise, but always gives us a comfortable rhythm to return to. Embracing this kind of rhythm has truly transformed our summers, making them less chaotic and much more enjoyable for our entire family.
