beautiful NYC day trips without a car

If you’re looking for fun day trips from New York that don’t require a car, look no further than the enchanting gardens and property of Untermyer Gardens in Yonkers just north of the city!

This was a former Gilded Age estate, the house is no longer there but the Indo-Persian gardens are still in full Gilded Age glory and able to visit!

I love the views of the Hudson River from the different viewpoints! It feels like a real life fairytale here!!!

How to get here by public transportation:

Take Metro-North (Hudson Line) from Grand Central Terminal to Greystone and walk 15 minutes (uphill walk fyi!)

Take 1 train to Van Cortlandt Park-242 St Station then transfer to the Westchester Bee Line 2 Bus (northbound) to Dehaven Drive

Untermyer Gardens
2025/9/11 Edited to

... Read moreHey fellow adventurers! So you're planning a trip to the absolutely stunning Untermyer Gardens, right? It's truly a Gilded Age marvel, and trust me, those Indo-Persian gardens with their reflecting pools and breathtaking Hudson River views are just the beginning of a fantastic car-free day trip from NYC. But what else can you do once you're in Yonkers, or to make your day even more memorable? I've got some ideas based on my own explorations! First off, after you've soaked in every corner of Untermyer Gardens – don't forget to find the famous gazebo and that beautiful multi-tiered waterfall, they're picture-perfect! – you might want to extend your nature fix. Just a short walk or quick bus ride away, you can hop onto the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail. This historic pathway is super flat and perfect for a leisurely stroll or bike ride, offering serene sections away from city hustle. It's an amazing way to experience more of the local scenery, and it’s completely car-free, just like getting to the gardens! If you're into a mix of art, history, and science, the Hudson River Museum is another fantastic stop very close by. It’s got a planetarium, captivating exhibitions, and even an outdoor sculpture garden with incredible views of the Hudson. I always find it fascinating to learn about the region's history and see some cool art after a peaceful garden walk. Plus, it’s generally accessible via public transport routes in Yonkers, making it an easy addition to your itinerary. Feeling hungry after all that exploring? Yonkers has some hidden gems for dining. While I love packing a picnic to enjoy by the Hudson, sometimes you just crave something warm. Head towards the downtown Yonkers area near the waterfront for a variety of casual eateries. From cozy cafes perfect for a coffee break to diverse restaurants offering everything from Italian to Latin American cuisine, you’ll find something to refuel. I once grabbed an amazing sandwich at a local deli and enjoyed it right by the river – highly recommend! A few practical tips for your car-free adventure: Comfortable Shoes: Seriously, you'll be doing a lot of walking, especially that uphill stretch if you take the Metro-North to Greystone. Make sure you're ready for the formal garden's paths! Check Garden Hours: Untermyer Gardens has specific opening times, and they can vary seasonally, so always double-check their website before you go. Layer Up: The weather by the Hudson River can be a bit unpredictable, so bringing layers is always a good call. The vibrant foliage and flowers look stunning in any weather, but you'll want to be comfortable. Combine Your Trip: Since you're already making the effort to get there via public transport from Grand Central Terminal, consider making it a full day. Visiting the gardens in the morning and then heading to the Hudson River Museum or enjoying a meal in Yonkers makes for a perfectly rounded day. Getting there is half the fun! Remember, whether you take the Metro-North from Grand Central to Greystone and enjoy that scenic 15-minute walk, or opt for the 1 train to Van Cortlandt Park-242 St Station and then the Westchester Bee Line 2 Bus, it’s all part of the adventure. It’s wonderful knowing you can have such a rich, beautiful escape from New York City without needing a car. Happy exploring!
