... Read moreChinese New Year celebrations hold a special place in many of our hearts, especially when it involves traveling to reconnect with family. Traveling from Singapore to Pahang is a long journey that many undertake to be with loved ones during the festive season. I’ve experienced both the excitement and exhaustion of such trips, and this year, not driving for seven hours was a relief! One of the most memorable parts of Chinese New Year is the reunion dinner. It’s a time when family members gather to honor ancestors before enjoying an abundance of dishes, symbolizing prosperity and unity. The tradition of paying respects to ancestors, often with offerings and a moment of silence, reminds us of our roots and the blessings passed down through generations. Another highlight is the lohei or yu sheng ritual, a vibrant salad toss that symbolizes good fortune and prosperity. This year’s experience was especially fun as everyone eagerly participated, despite some surprises like mango being a rare addition or realizing it wasn’t yet tossed when midnight struck the Year of the Horse. The communal energy and laughter filled the room, creating everlasting memories. I also love how pets become part of the celebrations. My uncle’s adopted dog was adorably nervous during its first Chinese New Year, showing that the festival spirit embraces even our furry family members. Sharing old photos of past celebrations, some damaged by floods, adds a nostalgic touch and makes us appreciate the resilience and continuity of family traditions. For those planning their own CNY trips or gatherings, give yourself plenty of time to relax and enjoy these moments. Whether it's the excitement of traveling, the comforting rituals of reunion dinners, or the joyous shouting of "Huat ah!" for prosperity, every detail contributes to the richness of the experience. Happy Chinese New Year and may your celebrations be filled with warmth, laughter, and abundance!
