Have you ever stumbled upon an artwork and felt an instant connection to a character, even if you don't know their full story? Chances are, you've encountered an Original Character, or OC! For me, creating OCs is one of the most rewarding and personal parts of being an artist. It's truly amazing to bring a new personality to life from scratch. So, what exactly does OC stand for in art? Simply put, OCs are characters that are entirely original, created by an artist from their own imagination, rather than being fan art of existing characters from movies, games, or books. They're a blank canvas for creativity, allowing artists to explore unique stories, styles, and designs. The freedom to define every aspect, from their backstory to their school uniform or costume, is what makes OCs so special. One of the best tools for developing an OC is a character sheet. Just like you might see for characters like Yuri, Yaoi, and Miyuki, these sheets are invaluable. They help solidify a character's visual identity and often include details about their height, typical expressions, and signature outfits. For instance, a sheet might detail Yuri's 5'11" stature and her specific black jacket, light green shirt, and red tie combo, or highlight Yaoi's distinctive pink hair and light blue V-neck sweater. These details, big or small, contribute to a cohesive and memorable design, helping you understand what an OC is in art beyond just a drawing. When it comes to clothes for OCs, the possibilities are endless and hugely impactful. A character's attire tells a story about who they are, where they come from, and even their personality. Take Miyuki, who might be seen in a fantastical dark-skinned body suit with various wig options (pink, blue, dark brown), or in simpler casual child-appropriate clothing like a striped top and blue skirt. Each outfit choice, whether it's black thigh-highs for one character or black pants and black shoes for another, adds depth and realism. Even subtle elements like optional ribbon or inconsistent sleeve lengths can become iconic traits that define a character's different art styles within your creative world. My personal process for creating an OC often starts with a spark of inspiration – maybe a color palette, a feeling, or a snippet of a story. Then comes the fun part: sketching! I love exploring various looks and features, seeing how a specific hairstyle or type of footwear can alter a character's entire vibe. Don't be afraid to experiment; sometimes the best ideas come from unexpected places. Remember, your OC is a reflection of your unique creativity, and there's no single right way to bring them to life. So, go ahead and explore character OCs – create your own!
