why should we give Vitamin D drops to the newborn?

I find it weird that my pediatrician told me to give baby Vitamin D drops because I’m breastfeeding. I thought that in general breast milk has everything the baby needs but it looks like formula has it all instead? Can someone explain this to me please? What can happen if I don’t give drops?

... Read moreWhen my pediatrician first told me to give my newborn Vitamin D drops, I was genuinely surprised! Like many of you, I always thought breast milk had everything my baby needed. It felt counterintuitive to add something, especially when formula is often fortified with vitamins. But after doing some research and talking more with my doctor, I realized just how crucial these tiny drops are for our little ones, especially those who are exclusively breastfed. It turns out, while breast milk is truly amazing and provides incredible immune benefits and nutrition, it naturally contains very little Vitamin D. This isn't a reflection of a mother's diet; even if a breastfeeding mom takes high doses of Vitamin D, only a small amount transfers to her milk. The primary way humans get Vitamin D is through sun exposure, which causes the skin to produce it. However, newborns and infants should never be exposed to direct sunlight to avoid sunburn and skin damage, which means they can't make their own Vitamin D naturally. So, why is Vitamin D so important for a newborn? It's absolutely vital for bone health. Without enough Vitamin D, babies can't properly absorb calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for developing strong bones and teeth. A severe deficiency can lead to a condition called rickets, which causes soft and weak bones, potentially leading to bone deformities. It's truly something we want to prevent at all costs. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that all breastfed and partially breastfed infants receive 400 International Units (IU) of Vitamin D daily, starting shortly after birth. Administering these Vitamin D drops for new born babies can seem a bit daunting at first, but it's actually quite simple. Most come with a dispenser that gives a precise 400 IU dose in a single drop. Consistency is key! I found it easiest to give them at the same time every day, often during a feeding. You can drop it directly into your baby's mouth, aiming for the cheek to avoid choking, or drop it onto a clean nipple (before or during breastfeeding) or even mix it with a tiny bit of expressed breast milk in a spoon or syringe. Just be sure your baby gets the full dose. For babies who are formula-fed, they usually don't need additional Vitamin D because formula is fortified, but always check with your pediatrician if you have any doubts. Don't worry if you miss a day here and there; just continue the next day. It's about overall consistency, not perfection, in ensuring your baby gets this crucial nutrient for a healthy start!

I never used them. it caused severe constipation in my 2 1/2 month premie son so never used them with my girls and they were perfectly fine.

Vitamin D is the one thing breastmilk is slightly deficient in baby doesn’t get enough vitamin d from breastmilk so drops are recommended, even if you yourself take extra vitamin d baby still won’t receive much
