It’s race week! Spoiler: your training IS the half-marathon! You’ve already done the work, so take care of you

🌿 Get a massage—you can save this for after the race too, but I love feeling fresh and relaxed race week

🌿 Focus on nutrition—you need more carbs this week! Fuel accordingly, and fuel ENOUGH

🌿 Prioritize your sleep—no late nights of endless scrolling. Try and aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep

🌿 Reduce mileage—run a few warm up/shakeout/base runs but don’t go too crazy

... Read moreWhile race week is the grand finale of your hard work, true half marathon prep often starts much earlier than just seven days out. If you've been wondering how to truly prepare for a half marathon from start to finish, beyond just the final week, I've got you covered with some insights from my own journey to the starting line. My biggest takeaway from preparing for multiple half marathons is the importance of a structured yet flexible training plan. Don't just run; run with a purpose! I usually follow a 12-16 week program, gradually increasing my mileage. Incorporating speed work and tempo runs really helped build my endurance and speed. And remember, consistency is key – showing up for those shorter, less glamorous runs truly adds up to a strong foundation. Nutrition isn't just for race week; it's a daily commitment throughout your training cycle. I focus on a balanced diet rich in complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, and healthy fats. This means lots of whole grains, fresh vegetables, and fruits. I've found that meal prepping on Sundays, filling those handy meal prep containers with balanced meals, saves me so much time and ensures I'm fueling my body right even on busy days. Experimenting with what foods sit well during long runs is also crucial – you don't want any surprises on race day! Remember, your body is a high-performance machine; give it the premium fuel it deserves. Speaking of fuel, hydration is another non-negotiable that's often overlooked until race week. I learned this the hard way! I make it a point to carry my Stanley tumbler everywhere and aim for at least 80-120 oz of water every single day, not just during intense workouts. Electrolytes also play a big role, especially on those hot, humid long run days or after particularly long sessions. Staying consistently hydrated prevents fatigue, aids muscle recovery, and keeps everything functioning optimally. Having the right gear makes a huge difference in comfort and injury prevention throughout your half marathon prep. Invest in good running shoes that are right for your gait, and make sure to replace them regularly. A comfortable hydration vest or belt is essential for longer runs, allowing you to carry water and fuel. And for tracking progress, pacing, and staying on track with your training, my smartwatch has been an invaluable tool – seeing my pace, distance, and heart rate in real-time helps me stay accountable and train smarter. Finally, don't underestimate the power of mental preparation. There will be tough runs, moments of doubt, and days you just don't feel like lacing up. Visualizing success, breaking down long runs into smaller, manageable chunks, and reminding myself why I started helps me push through. A positive mindset can be just as crucial as physical fitness on race day. Trust the process, trust your training, and believe in yourself. All these steps lead you confidently into race week, ready to execute your final prep and conquer that finish line!
