“Sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.” — John 5:14 (KJV)
Jesus spoke these words to the man whom He had healed at the pool of Bethesda. Christ not only healed his body, but He also addressed the condition of his soul. The Lord's concern is not merely that we be delivered from suffering, but that we be delivered from sin.
This verse reminds us that sin is serious before a holy God. Many desire the blessings of Christ, but Jesus calls us to repentance and a changed life. Saving faith produces a desire to forsake sin and walk in obedience.
The warning, “lest a worse thing come unto thee,” teaches that there are consequences to sin. While not every trial is the direct result of personal sin, persistent rebellion against God brings judgment, chastening, and spiritual ruin. As it is written:
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” (Galatians 6:7 KJV)
The good news is that Christ does not merely command us to leave sin—He gives us power to overcome it. Through His death and resurrection, sinners can be forgiven, cleansed, and transformed.
Therefore, let every believer examine his heart. If there is sin that has been tolerated, confess it to the Lord, forsake it, and follow Christ faithfully. The same Savior who says, “Sin no more,” also says:
“Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” (John 8:11 KJV)
May we walk in holiness, gratitude, and reverence before the Lord, remembering that His grace not only pardons sin but teaches us to deny ungodliness and live unto Him. Amen.
