... Read moreHey everyone! I'm still figuring out this app, but I wanted to share a little more about my process for creating original characters, especially these two scientist OCs you see in my art. It's an older piece, but it still holds a special place in my heart because it really captures the essence of what I love about character design.
When I first started sketching these two, I really wanted to play with contrasting personalities within a similar theme. You can see the younger character with that wide, enthusiastic smile, full of curiosity and perhaps a touch of mischief. Then there's the older one, with a more serious, focused expression – maybe they're the mentor, or perhaps they've just seen one too many failed experiments! I often find that giving my OCs distinct facial expressions helps bring them to life even before I write a single line of their story.
For their appearance, I aimed for something unique and memorable. The dark skin and black hair were a starting point, but I added those striking red facial markings to give them an otherworldly or perhaps even experimental feel, fitting their 'scientist' role. And those cat-like ears? They were a fun detail to hint at a non-human origin or perhaps some genetic experimentation within their world. Little details like that can make an OC truly stand out.
Of course, what's a scientist without a lab coat? It's a classic trope, but I think it works really well here, grounding them in their scientific profession even with all their unique features. The yellow polka-dot background was a whimsical touch to add some contrast to the seriousness of their work, making the overall piece feel a bit more playful.
If you're thinking about creating your own scientist OCs, my biggest tip is to think about their 'why'. Why are they scientists? What drives their research? Are they benevolent, mad, or somewhere in between? Don't be afraid to give them unusual traits or backgrounds that might not fit the typical mold. Maybe they're scientists in a fantasy world, or perhaps their experiments have given them their unique physical characteristics.
Developing a strong backstory, even if it's just a few bullet points, can really flesh out your characters. For example, is the older scientist trying to protect the younger one? Or are they collaborators on a groundbreaking (or dangerous) project? Considering their relationship dynamics and personal histories makes them feel more real. And don't forget the fun part – imagining them in different scenarios, perhaps even as collectible figures, showcasing their unique designs! Just letting my imagination run wild helps me create characters that I'm genuinely excited to draw and share. Hope this helps anyone looking to dive into OC creation!
