Books I read this month

2024/6/27 Edited to

... Read moreContinuing on from my initial thoughts, let's dive a little deeper into some of the incredible stories I picked up this month. Re-reading the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series, specifically 'The Lightning Thief' and 'The Sea of Monsters' by Rick Riordan, was such a journey back to my childhood. There’s something undeniably magical about how Riordan weaves ancient Greek mythology into a modern-day adventure. The characters are so relatable, and the quest to save Olympus feels genuinely urgent. I think what makes these books, and stories like them, so captivating is their ability to transport you to another world while still mirroring aspects of our own. It’s no wonder they’ve sparked so much discussion, fan theories, and even inspired adaptations. It really makes you think about how these beloved characters live on in different forms beyond the pages, connecting with new audiences and keeping the spirit of the story alive. The blend of humor, action, and heart is just perfect for anyone looking for an escape, and honestly, who doesn't love a good demigod adventure? Moving from epic fantasy to contemporary fiction, I found myself completely engrossed in Kathleen Glasgow's work. Her books, including 'Girl in Pieces,' 'How to Make Friends with the Dark,' and 'You'd Be Home Now,' are incredibly powerful and raw. They tackle difficult themes with such sensitivity and honesty, exploring mental health, grief, and finding strength in vulnerability. Reading 'Girl in Pieces' left a lasting impression on me; it’s a tough but ultimately hopeful story about a young woman trying to put her life back together. Glasgow has a unique way of making you deeply empathize with her characters, even when they're making choices that are hard to understand. These aren't always easy reads, but they are incredibly rewarding, offering perspectives that stay with you long after you've turned the last page. And then there was 'Lord of the Flies' by William Golding. This classic is always a powerful experience. It’s a stark reminder of human nature and how easily society can unravel without structure. Every time I read it, I find new layers of meaning and symbolism, especially in the characters of Ralph and Piggy. It prompts so many questions about leadership, morality, and the thin veneer of civilization. It’s a book that really makes you think, sparking discussions about what it means to be human and the darkness that can lurk within us all. Finally, I also picked up 'Shiver' by Maggie Stiefvater. Her writing always has such a lyrical quality, making the world of werewolves feel incredibly real and atmospheric. It’s a beautiful, haunting story that explores themes of love, transformation, and belonging. The way she describes the changing seasons and the characters' inner turmoil is just exquisite. It was a perfect read for curling up on a quiet evening. Each of these books, regardless of genre, offered a unique escape and a chance to reflect. It's truly amazing how much you can learn and experience through reading, isn't it? I'm already looking forward to what next month's stack will bring!
