Septem hurt the least if you’ve had your ears pierced it’s the same pain. Pain like a 2.
The nose and vertical labret were the same pain but the labret was so quick it was nothing. Pain like a 5-6#storytime #lemon8contest

While my own experience is with a Vertical Labret, I can definitely share some insights that might help you prepare, since many of the sensations and aftercare are pretty similar across different labret placements, including the side labret. My Vertical Labret was a 5-6/10 on the pain scale – a quick pinch, intense for a second, then it was over. But what about the side labret?
From what I've heard from friends who have gotten their side labret piercings, the initial pain is often described as a sharp pinch, similar to mine, but it can vary. Some say it's more of a dull pressure rather than a sharp pain. This is because the flesh on the side of your lip might be a bit different from the center. Generally, people rate it somewhere between a 4 and 7 out of 10. Compared to my Septum piercing, which felt like a 2 (super easy, just like getting your ears pierced!), any labret piercing will likely be a bit more noticeable due to the nature of the area. My Nose piercing also felt similar to my Vertical Labret, around that 5-6 mark, so if you've had a nostril piercing, you might have a good reference point.
Factors Affecting Side Labret Piercing Pain:
Individual Pain Tolerance: This is huge! What feels like a 4 to one person could be a 7 to another. Don't let others' experiences completely scare you or make you overconfident.
Piercer Skill: A skilled piercer who is quick, precise, and confident can make a world of difference. Always do your research and go to a reputable, experienced professional.
Jewelry: The initial jewelry size and type can impact the feeling, though the piercing itself is the main event.
Your Body on the Day: Being well-rested, hydrated, and having eaten can make you feel more resilient during the process.
Managing the Pain (During & After):
Before: Don't take pain relievers like ibuprofen before your piercing, as they can thin your blood and increase bleeding. Eat something! Being on an empty stomach can make you feel lightheaded.
During: Focus on deep breathing. Inhale slowly, exhale slowly. Distract yourself. It’s over before you know it!
Immediately After: You’ll likely experience swelling and a throbbing sensation. This is normal. Ice packs (wrapped in a clean cloth) can help reduce swelling in the first 24-48 hours. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen (now it’s okay!) can manage the discomfort.
Side Labret Aftercare – Beyond the Pain:
Healing is where the real work begins, and it’s crucial for avoiding complications and ensuring your piercing looks great. A side labret typically takes 6-10 weeks to heal initially, but full healing can take longer.
Cleaning: Use a sterile saline solution (0.9% sodium chloride, no additives) 2-3 times a day. Gently clean the outside with a cotton swab and rinse the inside of your mouth with alcohol-free mouthwash after meals. Don't touch it with unwashed hands!
Swelling: Expect swelling for the first few days, which is why your piercer will use a longer bar initially. Once swelling subsides, you'll need to go back for a downsize to a shorter bar to prevent irritation and damage to your teeth/gums.
Eating/Drinking: Stick to soft foods for the first few days to avoid irritating the piercing. Avoid extremely hot, spicy, or acidic foods. Be mindful when eating to prevent biting your jewelry.
Oral Hygiene: Maintain excellent oral hygiene, but be gentle around the piercing. Use a new, soft-bristled toothbrush.
Avoid: Playing with the jewelry, twisting it, picking at crusties, harsh chemicals, swimming in public pools, and oral contact with others until fully healed.
My Vertical Labret, similar to what you'd expect with a side labret, was a bit sensitive for the first week, and I had to be careful with eating. But with proper care, it healed beautifully. Remember, every body is different, but being prepared for the pain and committed to aftercare will make your side labret piercing journey much smoother!
