Working with ceramics, especially using inlay techniques, has opened up a lot of creative possibilities for me. Inlay involves carving designs into the clay surface and filling those grooves with colored slips or glazes, which helps create detailed contrasts and texture. For my recent projects inspired by the Sturniolo theme, I found that medium blue and black glazes worked particularly well; the blue provided a vibrant yet calming tone, while the black filled in details sharply to emphasize patterns. A big part of my process involved experimenting with layering and polishing the inlay so the colors contrasted just right without bleeding or fading during firing. It’s important to test glaze combinations on small tiles before applying them to full pieces, especially with medium blue hues as they can shift during kiln firing. This way I could perfect how the colors looked after firing and ensure the designs would pop.
