... Read moreI used to dread getting insulted. That gut-punch feeling, the immediate surge of anger, the desperate search for the perfect comeback – it was exhausting. For a long time, I thought the only way to 'handle insults' was to fight back or crumble. But through my own healing journey, I discovered a much more powerful approach, one that actually helps me make peace with my anger. It might sound counterintuitive, but I've learned that anger can actually be useful. Instead of suppressing emotions when someone says something hurtful, I now try to tune in and listen to what that anger is telling me. Is it that a boundary has been crossed? Is it a core belief of mine that feels attacked? This shift in perspective, from seeing anger as an enemy to seeing it as an ally, has been transformative. The OCR mentioned 'anger can be useful because...' and I truly believe it now. It's an internal alert system. So, what does it mean to 'appreciate and work together with your anger'? For me, it means acknowledging it without letting it take over. When an insult hits, I take a breath. I recognize the feeling of anger, and instead of reacting impulsively, I give myself a moment. This pause is crucial for de-escalation responding to insults. It allows me to choose my response rather than simply reacting. Sometimes, the best comeback for bullies isn't a witty retort, but a calm, composed demeanor that shows you're unbothered. This often disarms the aggressor more effectively than any verbal jab. When someone insults you, a few strategies have really helped me. First, remember you don't have to engage. If you're dealing with a toxic person, walking away or changing the subject can be your most powerful move. Second, state your boundary calmly: 'I'm not going to continue this conversation if you speak to me like that.' Third, if it's a misunderstanding, clarify. Sometimes people don't realize the impact of their words. Finally, and this is where I really thank anger for identifying what matters to me, after the interaction, I reflect. What triggered me? What can I learn about my own values or triggers? This internal work is key to truly dealing with insults and preventing them from chipping away at your self-worth. This approach isn't about being a doormat; it's about reclaiming your power. It's about 'how to react if someone insults you' in a way that protects your peace, not just your pride. It's a continuous healing journey, and I'm still learning. But I can tell you, making peace with your anger and choosing mindful responses has significantly improved my mental health. It’s truly how I've learned to handle insults like a pro – by focusing on my internal response rather than external validation or retaliation.
