They TOOK the “IMPOSSIBLE” ⚔️ Battle of Vimy Ridge
World War 1 history in 10 seconds: At 5:30 a.m. on Easter Monday, 9 April 1917, all four divisions of the Canadian Corps attacked together for the first time.
Their objective was Vimy Ridge, a heavily fortified German position overlooking the surrounding countryside in northern France.
After months of planning and training, Canadian infantry advanced closely behind a carefully timed creeping artillery barrage that moved progressively across the German defences.
Most of the ridge was captured on the first day. Hill 145 was secured during the fighting that followed, and by 12 April the remaining German position known as "The Pimple" had also fallen.
Victory came at enormous cost.
The Canadian Corps suffered 10,602 casualties, including 3,598 killed.
Vimy Ridge became one of Canada's most famous battles of the First World War.
