Canon, Concentration, Wisdom, Summary
Canon (physical training, verbal):
Means: Body and verbal control not to encroach on oneself and others (e.g., not killing animals, burglary, lying).
It's like a house without piles.
Concentration (mind training):
Means: Training the mind to be united, to be calm, to be firm, not to be distracted (such as determination).
Advantage: Making the Mind Powerful, Strong, Like Clear Water, Seeing Shadows Clearly
Wisdom (practice enlightenment):
Means: The natural enlightenment that all things are impermanent, distressed, and impersonal.
Advantage: Seeing a decaying house, knowing how to repair it
The relationship of the three:
Precepts are the basis of concentration: If there are bad precepts, the mind will not be calm.
Concentration is the basis of wisdom: If the mind is unsettled, wisdom is difficult.
Wisdom sees the penalty of passion: When it is wise, it understands what to put aside, making precepts and concentration better.
Summarize the course taught by the Lord: All three are necessary to act in harmony with each other in daily life in order to gain a proper understanding of life and lead to actual suffering, not just oral knowledge.
