... Read moreIt's funny how certain places just call to you, isn't it? For me, it's a deep-seated love for both urban exploration and the haunting beauty of swamps. When I say 'Things I love,' these two are definitely at the top of my list!
Urban exploration, or Urbex, isn't just about trespassing or getting into abandoned places. For me, it's a profound connection to history, a silent conversation with forgotten spaces. It's about uncovering the stories these places hold, seeing the beauty in decay, and capturing moments that most people never get to witness. There's an incredible thrill in stepping into a building that time has forgotten, where nature is slowly reclaiming what was once human-made. The silence, broken only by the creak of old wood or the rustle of leaves, is surprisingly peaceful.
And then there are swamps. Often misunderstood, these ecosystems are incredibly vibrant and mysterious. My recent visit to a swamp, capturing that scene with the light-colored bark trees growing out of dark, reflective waters, perfectly encapsulates why I adore them. It's the raw, untamed nature, the way the light filters through the canopy, and the sense of ancient quietude. Swamps, like abandoned buildings, feel like places out of time, offering a different kind of beauty and a unique challenge for photography.
If you're curious about urban exploration, here are a few things I've learned along the way, because safety and respect are paramount:
Do Your Research: Always try to know the history of a place before you go. It adds so much to the experience.
Safety First: Never go alone. Always tell someone where you're going and when you expect to be back. Wear sturdy shoes, long sleeves, and pants to protect yourself from hazards. A good flashlight is your best friend!
Legal & Ethical Considerations: This is huge. Urbex often involves trespassing, so be aware of local laws. My personal rule is: 'Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.' Respect the property, don't damage anything, and leave it exactly as you found it. The goal is to document, not destroy.
Gear Up: Beyond safety gear, a reliable camera is essential. I love capturing the textures, the light, and the overall atmosphere. A wide-angle lens can be amazing for capturing the vastness of these spaces.
Be Prepared for the Unexpected: From uneven floors to strange noises, every Urbex adventure is different. Stay alert and trust your instincts.
Whether it's the thrill of discovering an abandoned factory or the quiet majesty of a forgotten swamp, these explorations fuel my creativity and offer a perspective on the world that you just can't get anywhere else. It’s about seeking out the hidden, appreciating the transient nature of things, and finding beauty in the unexpected. What are your 'Things I love' to explore?
