... Read moreI remember starting my first job, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, thinking HR was always there to help me. Boy, was I wrong! It took a few tough experiences for me to truly understand that HR is not your friend; they're essentially the company's lawyer, and their main goal is to protect the company, not necessarily you. This isn't a cynical take, but a crucial reality check I wish someone had given me sooner. Many of us go into our careers believing HR is a neutral party, an impartial mediator for employee issues. The truth is, their loyalty is tied to their paycheck, which comes directly from the company. Every cheerful smile and reassuring nod from an HR representative must be viewed through this lens. They use these tactics to make employees feel safe, but behind them are strict policies and strategies to protect the company above all else. I've learned that every conversation with HR, no matter how 'confidential' it seems, is potentially being documented. They take notes to protect the company, and unfortunately, every word an employee speaks can be used against them. This isn't some conspiracy; it’s standard practice for risk management. They build records, not just to help, but to have a clear paper trail in case of legal disputes or performance issues. These records that don't disappear become part of their surveillance strategy, documenting every complaint, frustration, and 'confidential' meeting. Consider situations like layoffs. While HR might present it as "restructuring" or a necessary business decision, for the employees involved, it's a devastating loss of stability. In these moments, HR acts as the "executioner," managing the process to minimize company exposure and ensure a smooth, legally compliant (for the company) transition, rather than prioritizing the individual's well-being. Another hard truth is that HR's law is often "Compliance > Compassion." While they might empathize with your situation, their primary directive is to adhere to company policy and legal frameworks. Your employee tears, health, or well-being often take a backseat to corporate interests. I've seen instances where HR will protect valuable abusers within the company, not because they endorse the behavior, but because removing a high-performing individual could generate greater company liability or disruption than managing the abused employee. So, what's a regular employee to do? My biggest takeaway is this: HR is not a friend, colleagues aren't family. This doesn't mean you can't have good relationships, but it means maintaining professional boundaries. Avoid oversharing personal details, frustrations, or complaints that aren't absolutely necessary. Focus on your work and delivering value. Most importantly, empower yourself outside of your corporate role. The advice to build a second income stream isn't just about extra cash; it's about creating financial independence and peace of mind. In today's rapidly evolving job market, with tools like AI implementation making it easier than ever to start side hustles or build passive income, there's no excuse not to. Having that cushion means you're less vulnerable if your main job becomes unstable or if you find yourself in a situation where you need to leave. It shifts the power dynamic back towards you. Protect yourself, because ultimately, no one else will do it as diligently as you can.

I 100% agree I broke my foot HR did not want to pay me at the dental office because they said I was wearing the wrong shoes, but I reminded them that my manager was there all my shift and she didn’t send me home to change my shoes and I also got a lawyer involved My lawyer got them to pay me. The first offer was $1600 but after I said no that I deserve better because I had a whole freaking foot fracture that made me suffer for over eight weeks and I still had aftermath pain on my foot. They gave me $7000 never say yes to the first Offer
