Spending Habits as a Gamer

Being a gamer in this age is so expensive. Before its focus was just a simple physical copy now there’s micro transactions even in games that you already dropped $60+ on.

Sales happen constantly on steam, DLCs come out broken, physical collector additions of games don’t even exist as much anymore.

About a year ago I got really into anti consumerism content when it came to tech products but lately this year I’ve been leaning towards games entirely. Am I actually going to play this? Is it worth the price? Does the game even work right now? That’s literally a question we have to ask ourselves before buying.

Now I wishlist a game I want and wait for a sale before I buy it. I rarely buy games full price, if I crave a new game I play one I haven’t finished yet, and I make sure to go in a spoiler free deep dive on the game to see if it actually works and is worth the price.

Now I rarely spend money on games my only issue is the occasional rivals skin but only in actual characters I play comp with. Gaming is still fun without needing a new game every week.

Before you buy, think. Do you actually need this game in your collection RIGHT now? Or can you just get it later?

... Read moreHey fellow gamers! It's so true, gaming can feel like a bottomless pit for your wallet these days. I totally resonate with the feeling of seeing a new release and asking myself, 'IS THIS WORTH MY MONEY?' and 'DO I REALLY NEED THIS RIGHT NOW?' I've been there, making impulse purchases only to regret them later. But I've learned a lot on my journey to smarter gaming, and I want to share some practical tips that have genuinely transformed my experience. First off, let's talk about making the most of what you have. Before eyeing that shiny new title, I often ask myself, 'WHAT AM I ALREADY ENJOYING?' There's a huge backlog on my hard drive, I'm sure many of you can relate! Replaying old favorites, tackling DLCs I bought but never finished, or diving into community-made mods can breathe new life into your existing library without costing a dime. It's amazing how much fun you can rediscover! When it comes to new games, my biggest game-changer has been the wishlist. Seriously, use it! Platforms like Steam, PlayStation Store, or Xbox have robust wishlist features that often notify you when a game goes on sale. I use browser extensions too, like IsThereAnyDeal.com, to track prices across different storefronts. Patience is a virtue here; most games go on sale eventually, and often for significant discounts. Waiting even a few months can save you 50% or more, allowing you to buy two games for the price of one! Another crucial step for positive gaming spending habits is research. Before even wishlisting, I do a deep dive. I browse review aggregators, watch spoiler-free gameplay videos, and actively look for discussions about performance issues or predatory microtransactions. The community is your best friend here! There's nothing worse than buying a game day one only to find it's a buggy mess or riddled with pay-to-win mechanics. This pre-purchase check helps answer that nagging 'IS THIS WORTH MY MONEY?' question proactively. And speaking of making your gaming space your own, let's touch on setups! My own little corner brings me so much joy, especially my subtle 'Resident Evil' touches. You don't need to break the bank for a themed setup. For instance, those awesome Resident Evil posters in my setup? Found them at a local comic con for a steal! Or consider DIY projects – a simple LED strip light can transform the ambiance, or finding affordable fan art prints online. It’s all about slowly curating items that resonate with your favorite games. My 'WELCOME LEON' banner was a fun, inexpensive print-out from Etsy that adds so much character. It doesn't have to be extravagant; a personalized mousepad or some themed collectibles can make your space feel truly yours and enhance your immersion, all while sticking to a budget you're comfortable with. Remember, it's about making your gaming experience fulfilling, both in-game and in your physical space, without unnecessary financial stress.

It is so annoying at this point. I always get games on sale or use g2a, but I have a problem with those darn micro transactions. I love skins in games, so I spend wayyy to much on that stuff. 😭
