running progress as a chronically congested gal

hiii <3 this post is for all my gals with chronic nasal issues like me who also love to run!

little bit about me - i've had chronic rhinitis for a very long time. like, to the point where i can't smell 99% of the time. my new ENT (shoutout to her fr, she's taking my issues seriously!!) finally realized that i have super inflamed turbinates, which make it so i:

- have a veeeeery narrow airway in my right nostril

- am always congested, no matter what time of year

- can't really get a good airflow as i do vigorous exercise

running has always been a "tough it out" sport for me. i got into it in college and i could barely breathe during every run, but i still kept trying. i kept working on my breathing, even during my runs where it felt like my congestion was choking me. i've been striving for a 5K finally below 40 minutes, and today i finally achieved that goal.

i started today's run congested. it was about 39°F out too, so the air was bitterly cold in my lungs. i ran to warm up, then i ran to meet my time goal of under 8 minutes per kilometer, and then i ran since it made me feel alive.

running with a constant handicap of my own body, my own nose, and my own congestion has been a struggle. it's been downright embarrassing at times to see people run by at a faster pace while i'm trying to catch my breath. but i'm slowly figuring it out and working through it at my own pace.

... Read moreFor those dealing with chronic rhinitis and narrow nasal passages, running can often feel like an uphill battle. The inflammation of turbinates, which are the long, narrow bones that help humidify and filter air, causes persistent congestion that severely limits airflow, especially during intense exercise. This condition not only hampers your breathing but also affects your overall endurance and speed. One key approach to managing running with chronic nasal congestion is to focus on breathing techniques tailored to your individual condition. Many runners find relief by incorporating nasal irrigation routines, such as saline sprays or neti pots, prior to running sessions. These methods can help clear mucus buildup and slightly reduce inflammation, improving nasal airflow temporarily. Another helpful strategy is pacing your runs carefully, especially in cold weather, which tends to exacerbate nasal inflammation and congestion. Starting with a gentle warm-up to acclimate your lungs and nasal passages to the cold air can make a noticeable difference. Layering your clothing to keep your core warm while protecting your face with masks or scarves can also aid in reducing discomfort and excessive congestion. It's important to listen to your body and set realistic, incremental goals. As shown in the progress detailed, achieving a 5K time below 40 minutes is a significant milestone for someone managing chronic rhinitis. Celebrate these small victories! Using technology like GPS watches or running apps to track pace and distance helps maintain focus and motivation. Consulting an ENT specialist is crucial for personalized diagnosis and treatment, as persistent turbinate inflammation may require medical intervention such as nasal sprays or in some cases surgical options. A trusted medical professional can tailor treatments that might reduce swelling and improve airway capacity, leading to better performance and comfort during runs. Joining support groups or online communities of runners with chronic respiratory or nasal issues offers valuable camaraderie and tips for coping. Sharing experiences helps reduce the stigma of running slower than peers and keeps the focus on health and progress rather than comparison. Remember, the journey is about endurance and resilience, not just speed. In summary, running while chronically congested requires a multifaceted approach: managing symptoms medically, optimizing environmental and behavioral factors, and prioritizing mental encouragement. With consistent effort and self-care, it's possible to improve your running performance and reclaim the joy of running despite nasal challenges.

Hi! 👋 I’m a runner too and I don’t struggle with your condition but I do have post nasal drip that makes it very annoying at times because I’m such a nose breather but whenever I’m exposed to the outdoors (which when I’m running, is all the time) it impacts me. I carry pocket packs of tissues in my running belt and kind of make the most of things. I don’t know what I’d do if I had narrow breathing in one of my nostrils too. Have you tried a humidifier at home? That can be helpful and saline spray too. Good luck with your 5k goals! 🍋🔥
