if you’re starting nursing school, read this🩺

in my first semester of nursing school, these four things were my biggest takeaways. i feel if you can manage to do all of these things efficiently, you’ll do great. yes, nursing school is difficult but you’re more than capable to handle it <3

... Read moreWhen I first started nursing school, I quickly understood why everyone warned me about how mentally and physically draining it could be. It wasn't just the sheer volume of material, but also the emotional weight of learning about patient care, the constant pressure of exams, and the long clinical hours that really took a toll. There were days I felt completely exhausted, questioning if I had made the right choice. My brain felt fried, and my body ached from sitting and studying for hours or being on my feet during clinicals. But through that first semester, I realized that understanding why it felt so draining was the first step to managing it. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and you need strategies to keep your energy and spirits up. Building on my initial takeaways, I found that deeper dives into these areas truly made a difference: Time Management is Key! This isn't just about making a schedule; it's about making a realistic one. I learned to break down huge assignments into smaller, manageable chunks. Instead of trying to read an entire chapter in one sitting, I'd dedicate 30-45 minutes to a section, take a short break, and then return. I also started using a digital calendar with reminders for everything – not just lectures and labs, but also dedicated study blocks and, importantly, time for myself. Planning my week on a Sunday evening became a non-negotiable ritual, helping me visualize the load and prevent last-minute panic that contributes so much to stress. Focus on You! In a program where everyone seems to be achieving, it's easy to fall into the comparison trap. This was a huge source of mental drain for me. I had to consciously shift my focus from what others were doing to my own learning journey. Some people learn best in groups, others alone. Some ace pharmacology, others excel in anatomy. Realizing my strengths and weaknesses, and tailoring my study methods to my needs, helped immensely. I stopped worrying about how many hours my classmates were studying and instead focused on deep understanding for myself. This protected my mental energy significantly. Work Hard, Play Later. This one was tough but essential. There were so many social events and opportunities I had to say no to, especially during exam periods. It felt like a sacrifice, but I reframed it as an investment in my future self. The 'play later' part became equally important. After a big exam or a particularly grueling week, I made sure to schedule something truly enjoyable – a coffee with a friend, a hike, or just a relaxing movie night. This planned downtime prevented complete burnout and recharged my batteries for the next challenge. It’s about balance, even if the scale tips heavily towards 'work' sometimes. Be Grateful. This might sound cliché, but practicing gratitude genuinely helped combat the negative feelings associated with the demanding nature of nursing school. When I felt overwhelmed, I'd take a moment to remember why I started. I'd think about the privilege of learning such a vital skill, the future patients I'd help, and even just the small victories – understanding a complex concept or nailing a skill in lab. Keeping a small gratitude journal where I jotted down one good thing that happened each day, no matter how small, really shifted my perspective and made the challenges feel less insurmountable. It reminded me that despite the drain, I was on a meaningful path. By actively implementing these strategies, I found myself not only surviving but actually starting to enjoy the process more. It's still hard, but now I feel more equipped to handle the mental and physical demands.
