We moved Pt. 3🌵
Living with his parents…
was not as smooth of a process as I had anticipated. I’m not here to spill tea, gossip, yap about what I’ve experienced BUT I do want to keep it real.
First of all, my in-laws are caring individuals and I’m forever grateful for the kindness and hospitality. My hubby and I were allowed to live in the largest spare room in the house and didn’t have to pay rent. We contributed by buying groceries, cleaning around the house, caring for the pets here and there and so forth. I also think it’s important to note that before my hubby and I got married I only met them once in person due to the driving distance and the short duration of both our dating and engagement periods.
Here are some things to look out for and some lessons learned:
1. Pray together!!!
- it’s easier said than done, but it’s essential to keeping a spiritually healthy relationship.
- God will not ignore your prayers. He’s a good, good father!!! Believe that in who He says He is!
2. Communicate intelligently and intentionally
- be on the same page with your spouse
- ask your in-laws what their expectations and boundaries are (write them down if needed)
- continue to check in periodically… people can switch up on you
- be honest with yourself ~ communicate YOUR boundaries and don’t double down
3. Be realistic with your timeline
- set realistic financial goals
- dream big dreams but don’t act prematurely
- when CAN you move out
4. Be grateful
- there is a season for everything and maybe in this one God is calling you to slow down
- take advantage of the time you have with your loved ones
- take frequent breathers ~ take care of yourself
5. Forgive and have grace
- no one is perfect. NO ONE. it’s not easy living with family, but as long as they’re not abusive or crossing your boundaries it’s doable. Apologize first when needed and don’t hold things over their heads. If you need to move and can move out do with a prayer and plan…

Moving in with in-laws can be challenging yet rewarding. It’s essential to establish clear expectations and boundaries right from the start. Make sure to have open discussions about household responsibilities, finances, and personal space. Such conversations foster understanding and help avoid potential conflicts. Additionally, prioritize healthy communication not only with your spouse but also with your in-laws. Regular check-ins can prevent misunderstandings and strengthen relationships. Emphasize gratitude for the support and shelter offered during this transitional phase; it can enhance your sense of belonging. Being realistic about timelines and financial goals is key. Draft a plan that allows flexibility for unforeseen circumstances, but also reflects your aspirations. Recognize that this living arrangement might be temporary, and make the most of the time spent together. Lastly, nurture a spirit of forgiveness. Living in close quarters will naturally lead to moments of friction. Approach these situations with grace; apologize when needed, and practice patience with one another. Ultimately, this experience, while challenging, can be a profound opportunity to grow closer as a family.
