Let's talk about Pho: In Japanese

I love Chicken Pho!

Or should I say 鶏肉フォー(toriniku fo)

This is a good opportunity to learn about meats in pho in case you find yourself wanting to order pho in Japan.

If you want to tell your waiter what kind of pho you'd like, you can say these:

牛肉フォーをお願いします

(gyūniku fō o onegaishimasu)

beef pho, please.

シーフードフォーをお願いします

(Shīfūdo fō o onegaishimasu)

Seafood pho, please.

ベジタリアンフォーをお願いします

(Bejitarian fō o onegaishimasu)

Vegetarian pho, please.

鶏肉フォーをお願いします

(toriniku fō o onegaishimasu)

chicken pho, please.

if you'd like to indicate you're preference for spice you can say:

辛くないでお願いします

(Karakunai de onegaishimasu)

Not spicy, please.

あまり辛くないでお願いします

(Amari karakunai de onegaishimasu)

Not too spicy, please.

So, what kind of pho do you like? Answer in Japanese in the comments! ☺️

... Read moreI remember my first time trying to order pho in Japan. Even with a dictionary, it felt a little daunting! But once I learned a few key phrases, it completely changed my dining experience. It's so rewarding to confidently ask for exactly what you want, like a comforting bowl of chicken pho – just like the 'A PHOtastic Lunch' I enjoyed recently! Beyond just the written phrases, getting the pronunciation right can make a big difference. For 'pho' itself, it's often pronounced more like 'fuh' with a rising tone, rather than a hard 'foh'. And for words like 'gyūniku' (beef), practice the 'gyū' sound – it's like combining 'g' and 'yoo'. Don't be shy to try! Locals appreciate the effort and it makes ordering your favorite 'toriniku fo' (chicken pho) even smoother. While knowing how to specify your pho type and spice level is crucial, there are other useful phrases for a seamless dining experience in Japan. Here are a few I've found incredibly helpful: Sumimasen! (すみません!): This is your all-purpose 'Excuse me!' to call a waiter or get someone's attention. Arigato gozaimasu! (ありがとうございます!): A heartfelt 'Thank you very much!' goes a long way after your meal. Okaikei onegaishimasu. (お会計お願いします。): When you're ready to pay, this means 'Check, please.' Kore wa karai desu ka? (これは辛いですか?): If you're unsure about a dish, you can ask 'Is this spicy?' Oishikatta desu! (美味しかったです!): A polite and appreciative way to tell the staff 'It was delicious!' as you leave. While ramen and sushi might be more famous, Vietnamese pho has a growing presence in Japan. You'll find dedicated pho restaurants, often run by Vietnamese immigrants, especially in larger cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Sometimes, even casual Asian eateries might offer pho on their menu. A quick search on Google Maps for 'pho' or 'ベトナム料理' (betonamu ryōri - Vietnamese cuisine) can usually point you in the right direction to find your next 'A PHOtastic Lunch'. When your pho arrives, don't be surprised if it comes with a side plate of fresh herbs like cilantro, basil, lime wedges, and sometimes bean sprouts. These are meant to be added to your bowl to customize the flavor. You might also find bottles of sriracha and hoisin sauce on the table – feel free to add them to taste! Every 'A PHOtastic Lunch' experience is unique because you get to personalize it. Remember, slurping your noodles is generally acceptable and even a sign of enjoyment in Japan! So, don't hold back as you savor your chicken pho or whatever variety you choose. It’s all part of the authentic dining experience. Learning a few simple phrases really opens up your culinary adventures. So next time you're in Japan and craving those comforting rice noodles and savory broth, you'll be ready to order your perfect bowl of pho, just the way you like it. Happy eating, or as they say, 'Itadakimasu!'
