Hey nurses let’s talk priority

Nursing school tip of the day: Learn to think in ABCDE.

This is how we prioritize care in real-life emergencies and clinicals. Knowing this flow can literally save lives.

✅ A — Airway

✅ B — Breathing

✅ C — Circulation

✅ D — Disability (neuro check)

✅ E — Exposure (full body check)

💡 Always start with the airway — if they’re not breathing, nothing else matters.

The ABCDE method provides a systematic way to evaluate patients in critical situations effectively. A stands for Airway. Always ensure that the airway is clear; a blocked airway can lead to suffocation, making this step the highest priority. B represents Breathing. Assess the patient's breathing capability. If they are not breathing effectively, immediate intervention is required because it directly impacts oxygen supply. C refers to Circulation, where you check the patient's pulse and blood flow. A strong circulation is vital for sustaining life, so identify any issues that may require urgent attention. D stands for Disability, which involves performing a quick neurological assessment to determine the patient's level of consciousness and neurological stability. Understanding the patient's neurological status can guide further interventions. Finally, E is for Exposure, which involves conducting a full body check to identify any hidden injuries or conditions. Make sure the environment is safe and maintain patient dignity during this assessment. By mastering this ABCDE framework, nursing professionals can enhance their ability to respond promptly and effectively in emergency situations, ensuring the best possible patient outcomes.
