Sometimes you want a hearty, savory side dish that still delivers on taste without the extra fuss or specific dietary concerns that bacon might bring. That's exactly why this recipe has become my absolute favorite – it's packed with so much rich, sweet, and tangy goodness, and the ground beef adds a fantastic texture that makes it super satisfying. Let's talk about getting started. When I say 'make your ground beef,' I mean really bring out its best flavor! I usually brown about a pound of lean ground beef in a skillet, crumbling it as it cooks. Once it's nicely browned, it's super important to drain off any excess grease. This keeps your baked beans from becoming oily. Sometimes I even add a little salt and and black pepper to the beef while it's browning, just to build up that flavor base from the very beginning. Next up, the mixing magic! This is where all those incredible flavors come together. You'll want a large bowl or even directly into your baking dish. Combine your cooked ground beef with the canned baked beans (I always give my canned beans a quick rinse to remove some of the excess sodium, but that's totally optional!). Now for the stars of the show: your seasonings. Don't be shy with the garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper – they lay down a beautiful savory foundation. The 'Slap Ya Mama' is my secret weapon for a little kick, but you can adjust it to your preference. Smoked paprika adds that lovely depth and a hint of smoky flavor that often comes from bacon, but without the actual bacon! Then comes the Worcestershire sauce for umami, BBQ sauce for that classic tangy sweetness, and a dollop of mustard for a little zing. And seriously, you absolutely cannot forget the brown sugar! This is essential for that signature Southern-sweet profile. Mix, mix, mix everything together until it's perfectly combined. You want every bean and every bit of ground beef coated in that delicious sauce. Don't be afraid to give it a little taste test here – you can always tweak the seasonings a bit if you feel it needs more sweetness, tang, or spice. Once everything is mixed to perfection, pour it into your baking dish. I usually use a 9x13 inch dish, but any similar size works. Cover it loosely with foil – this helps keep the moisture in during the initial baking. Pop it into a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 1 hour. I like to remove the foil for the last 15-20 minutes to let the top get a little caramelized and bubbly.
