Eastern European fruit drink

... Read moreHey everyone! I recently rediscovered my love for Kompot, and I just had to share why this traditional Eastern European fruit drink has become a staple in my home. If you’ve ever wondered, 'what is Kompot?' or 'what is compote drink?', you're in for a treat! It's essentially a fruit-infused beverage, popular across Slavic and Armenian cultures, often enjoyed year-round but especially refreshing in warmer months. Unlike a thick compote (which is more of a fruit preserve or dessert topping in English), Kompot is a light, hydrating drink. Making homemade Kompot is incredibly rewarding, and I truly believe in the benefits of Kompot when it's made fresh. For me, the biggest draw is knowing exactly what kompot ingredients go into it – just fresh or frozen fruits of choice, water, and sugar to taste. No artificial colors, preservatives, or excessive sweetness that you often find in store-bought juices. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy the natural flavors and vitamins from berries and other fruits. My family loves how customizable it is; you can make it as tart or as sweet as you prefer! When it comes to how to make Kompot, the process is surprisingly simple, yet there are a few tricks I've picked up. First, grab a large pot and load it up with your chosen fruits. I often use a mix of cherries, berries, and apples – that's a classic Ukrainian Kompot recipe combination! Then, add enough water to cover all the fruit generously. Now for the cooking part. You stir & bring to a boil, but don't let it boil vigorously for too long. For me, how long to boil Kompot is key to preserving flavor and nutrients. I only let it simmer gently for about 5-10 minutes once it reaches a boil. This allows the fruit to release its juices and flavor without becoming mushy. After that, I turn off heat & let it cool completely, allowing it to steep. This steeping time is where the magic happens and the flavors deepen beautifully. Once cooled, it's time for the slightly messiest part but totally worth it! Grab your favorite pitcher & strain the liquid from berries (or whatever fruits you used). I always use a spatula to press down on the fruit in the sieve to get as much liquid out as possible. Don't waste any of that delicious essence! For the best taste, I always recommend you refrigerate overnight. The flavors really meld and become even more delightful when thoroughly chilled. I personally like mine with sparkling water for a little fizz, but it's equally great on its own. It's a fantastic alternative to sugary sodas and a lovely way to end a meal, even if it's not an Eastern European dessert itself, it complements them perfectly. Give this Kompot Recipe a try – you won't regret it!
