MY GLUCOSE TEST EXPERIENCE (pregnancy)

When I was pregnant I swear I saw only the worst and most dramatic stories of every single thing that could possibly go wrong throughout the whole pregnancy. One of the things that I saw so many people make such a big deal out of was the glucose test. People acted like it was the worst thing ever! Everyone’s experience is different I know, so I’m sure it was unpleasant for some people but I wish I had seen some positive stories about all these things throughout pregnancy as well, so here I am!

They let me choose my drink flavor (I highly suggest orange) and take it home at my last appointment before the glucose test. I was kind of struggling to figure out what to eat before hand since there were so many restrictions and I was scared to mess up my test but I knew I would feel really sick if I didn’t eat anything at all especially with drinking a sugary drink, so I had some turkey sausage as my breakfast and it worked great! I chugged my drink and headed on my way expecting to start to feel nauseous but never did thankfully. I took my test when I got there and had no problem! It was smooth sailing!

... Read moreHey fellow mamas-to-be! Just wanted to jump in and add a little more to the conversation about the dreaded pregnancy glucose test. It's totally normal to feel a bit anxious, especially with all the stories out there. But trust me, it's often not as bad as you might imagine! I've been there, and I want to share some extra tips I've picked up, both from my own experience and chatting with other pregnant women. First, let's talk about that glucose drink. Yes, it's super sweet! But here's a little secret: not all flavors are created equal. Like my friend mentioned, orange flavor is a popular choice for a reason – it often tastes the most like a regular soda, which can make it easier for a pregnant woman to chug down. Some clinics offer lemon-lime, fruit punch, or even clear options. If you get a choice, go with what sounds least offensive to you! The key is to drink it within 5 minutes, so try to mentally prepare yourself for that quick gulp. Chilling the drink beforehand can also make a huge difference; it somehow makes the sweetness less intense. Preparation is key! Beyond what you eat, think about what you wear. You'll be sitting for a while, so comfy clothes are a must. Bring a good book, headphones, or fully charged phone to pass the time during the hour-long wait between drinking the solution and your blood draw. Many people wonder, 'what can I eat before my glucose test?' While rules vary, my doctor recommended a high-protein, low-sugar breakfast to help stabilize blood sugar. That's why the turkey sausage worked so well for me – it provided sustained energy without a sugar spike. Avoid sugary cereals, fruit juices, or anything that could give you a false high. And remember, staying hydrated with plain water is always a good idea! During the test itself, after you've had your oral glucose tolerance test drink, you'll simply wait. This is often the longest part. You'll usually have one blood draw an hour after finishing the drink (for the 1-hour test) or multiple draws over 2-3 hours (for the 3-hour test). If you feel a bit nauseous, try deep breathing, focusing on a distraction, or having some plain water (if allowed by your clinic). Some clinics let you walk around gently, which can help. Don't be afraid to tell the nurses if you're feeling unwell; they've seen it all! Remember, this test is so important for detecting gestational diabetes, which can be managed to ensure a healthy pregnancy for both you and your baby. Passing your test is a great feeling, but even if you don't, it's just the first step in getting the right care. You're doing great, mama, and this is just one more step in your amazing pregnancy journey!
