The Weight of "You Have So Much Potential"
We talk about losing people, jobs, or relationships. But how do you mourn the version of yourself that never got to happen?
It’s the version of you that:
Finished that degree on time.
Didn’t have to take a "sabbatical" that turned into three years.
Could focus for more than ten minutes without a spiral.
Actually followed through on those "big ideas" everyone said you were capable of.
The Weight of "You Have So Much Potential"
When you’re struggling with mental health, whether it’s depression, anxiety, ADHD, or burnout…those words feel less like a compliment and more like a sentence.
It feels like watching a train leave the station while you’re stuck behind a glass wall. You can see where you’re supposed to be, you have the ticket, you have the luggage, but your legs simply won’t move. Then you spend the rest of the day (and night) blaming yourself for "wasting" the talent everyone else seems to see so clearly.
Finding a New Path
If you’re currently grieving the "productive" or "successful" person you thought you’d be by now, please hear this: Survival is a talent, too.
You haven't "lost" your potential; it has just been redirected toward keeping you alive. That is not a waste. That is a massive achievement. You are allowed to let go of the 5-year plan that was written by a version of you who wasn't carrying this weight.
Tag someone who needs to hear that they aren't defined by their mental issues. That they are loved and they are so much more than this.👇
