How much I spent weekly as a mom of one in MA

Sharing exactly what I spent in a week as a mom of one living in Massachusetts. No gatekeeping

🛒 Groceries – $56

We’re in full-on snack mode lately. A few toddler faves, plus staples for dinners and lunches. Sticking to generic brands is really helping to stretch our grocery budget.

🍓 Activities & Outings – $106

Teddy and I hit our usual playgroup, plus a visit to the splash pad and a fruit-picking farm. Worth every penny.

☕️ Coffee & Little Treats – $11

Mostly me being a tired mom and justifying a Dunks run. No regrets.

🚗 Gas – $48

Nothing wild, just errands, and one slightly out-of-the-way adventure. One take of gas usually last me 1.5 weeks.

🛍️ Thrifting – $56

We stopped in after playgroup and I found a couple of sweaters for me (my office is freezing) and a few Christmas stocking stuffers for Teddy.

💳 Debt Payment – $300

Prioritizing this every pay period. It takes a big chunk of the budget, but it’s worth it.

💸 Total Spent: $521

It’s always eye-opening to track it like this. I try to stretch every dollar, but I also try to make space for fun, even on a budget.

... Read moreIt's truly eye-opening to track weekly spending, and as a fellow mom navigating Massachusetts living, I've learned a few strategies that help stretch every dollar. My goal is always to balance necessities with those precious moments of fun with my little one, just like our recent farm visit or finding treasures at the thrift store. Mastering Your Grocery Budget in MA: Groceries can be a huge budget buster, especially with hungry toddlers! Beyond sticking to generic brands, I've found meal planning to be a lifesaver. Before hitting the store for a grocery trip, I map out all meals for the week, which dramatically cuts down on impulse buys and food waste. Making a detailed shopping list and sticking to it is crucial. I also love exploring local farmer's markets in season for fresh produce that can sometimes be more affordable than supermarkets, and it's a great outing for the kids too. Don't forget to check store flyers and use loyalty programs – every little bit adds up! I always keep an eye out for sales on staples, especially when I see my little one enjoying their favorite snacks. Affordable Fun & Activities for Kids in Massachusetts: Keeping little ones entertained doesn't have to cost a fortune. While a trip to a fruit-picking farm is wonderful, there are countless free or low-cost options here in Massachusetts. Our local libraries are a goldmine for story times, free passes to museums, and even toy lending programs. Exploring local parks and playgrounds, especially those with splash pads in the summer, provides hours of fun. Hiking easy trails is another fantastic way to enjoy MA's beautiful nature without spending a dime. Sometimes, just packing a picnic and heading to a scenic spot can make for a memorable day. Thrifting Smart for the Family: Thrifting is one of my favorite ways to save money, especially for kids' clothes and toys that they outgrow so quickly. I’ve had amazing luck finding like-new items, from cozy sweaters for myself to unique stocking stuffers like wooden puzzles and craft kits. When I head into a thrift store, I usually have a specific list of items I need, but I also leave room for serendipitous finds. Weekday mornings often yield the best selection before the weekend rush. Always check items thoroughly for wear and tear, and remember to wash everything before use. It's so satisfying to find a pre-loved toy that sparks joy, like that green toy garbage truck, knowing it didn't break the bank. Debt Management While Budgeting: Prioritizing debt payments is a big one for me, and it definitely takes a chunk of my budget. If you're tackling debt, creating a clear plan, whether it's the snowball or avalanche method, can make it feel manageable. Seeing that number go down is incredibly motivating. It's about making small, consistent sacrifices now for bigger financial freedom later. Small Joys, Big Savings: And for those little treats, like my indispensable coffee run, I try to balance it. Maybe I make coffee at home most days and treat myself once or twice a week. It’s about conscious spending and making sure those small indulgences genuinely feel like a treat, not just a habit. Every choice, big or small, contributes to a healthier budget here in Massachusetts.
