Things I Say as an L&D RN

Michigan
2025/6/6 Edited to

... Read moreAs a Labor and Delivery (L&D) RN, communication is a key component in providing care and support. Nurses often have a unique way of connecting with patients through light-hearted banter and reassuring language. Phrases like, "Hey girlfriend, let's have a baby!" and, "You’re doing so good, girlfriend!" help to foster a positive environment during labor. Understanding the common terms used can make the experience less intimidating for expectant moms. For instance, nurses often check on whether the mother feels sharp pains or just cramping, ensuring they monitor both the mother’s and baby’s health. Supportive comments like, "Baby is not liking these contractions, so we're gonna flip you," can help assure patients of their care team’s attentiveness. Additionally, L&D RNs bring a touch of humor to the room with expressions like, "Unfortunately, I'm gonna flip you like a pancake," all while efficiently managing the labor process. As such, these unique expressions enrich the birthing experience by blending professionalism with compassion, making each birth as memorable and comfortable as possible.
