After you succeed, you will fail.

Last week I hit a squat PR while home in Ottawa.

This week, I struggled with significantly less weight while training in Morocco.

Nothing is “wrong.”

This is typical of progress.

High performance doesn’t mean identical output every day.

It means understanding that life circumstances matter.

Travel.

Disrupted routines.

Different sleep. Different stress.

Even amazing experiences pull from the same energy bank.

Accessible High Performance is not about pretending those things don’t exist.

It’s about accounting for them and still showing up.

Some days you push harder.

Some days you train smarter.

Some days you just try your best.

Both count.

If you’ve ever felt discouraged because a strong week was followed by a harder one, this is your reminder that consistency beats perfection and adaptation beats ego.

Share this with someone who’s being too hard on themselves right now (or save it if that someone is you!).

... Read moreHaving experienced similar fluctuations in my own fitness journey, I can truly relate to how frustrating it feels when you achieve a personal best one week and then struggle with much lighter weights the next. What I’ve learned is that progress is rarely a straight line, and understanding the role of life’s unpredictable elements makes all the difference. For example, traveling to a new place means a disrupted routine, unfamiliar sleep patterns, and sometimes increased stress or excitement—all of which draw from your limited energy reserves. Even though these are positive experiences, they still impact your training output. Rather than seeing these fluctuations as failures, I recommend viewing them as signs of adaptation. Some days I push harder at the gym, while other days I focus on smarter training or simply showing up and giving my best effort with what I have. One tip that helped me stay consistent is accepting that every workout doesn’t have to be a peak performance session. Consistency over time, even through ups and downs, leads to meaningful progress. I also found it helpful to track external factors like travel, sleep quality, and stress levels alongside my workouts. This way, I could correlate these lifestyle changes with variations in my strength and energy, which made it easier to be kind to myself on tougher days. If you’re feeling discouraged because your strong week was followed by a weaker one, remember this perspective: consistency beats perfection, and adaptation beats ego. By acknowledging life’s realities without pretending they don’t exist, you empower yourself to maintain accessible high performance. Keep showing up, adjusting as needed, and celebrating all forms of progress. This mindset shift has been vital in sustaining my fitness and mental wellbeing, and I hope it inspires you too.
