From my experience attending various music and cultural events in Canada, I've noticed a recurring pattern where international artists, especially from the African diaspora, are heavily promoted and celebrated. While it's wonderful to have such diverse representation, this sometimes inadvertently sidelines talented Canadian artists who have been working diligently within the local entertainment scene. Organizers in cities like Toronto and Calgary often bring in guest artists with big followings, expecting high ticket sales, but local artists who contribute consistently to the community rarely receive comparable support or recognition. This has led to frustration among Canadian performers who feel undervalued, especially when awards or accolades are given to guest performers over homegrown talent. Another aspect worth mentioning is the ticket pricing system. Despite organizers being funded generously by taxpayers, attendees still have to pay for tickets to see these promoted artists, which can sometimes exclude fans of Canadian artists who might not have the same promotional budget or media spotlight. In addition, the phenomenon of awarding guest artists instead of local contributors raises questions about the criteria used in these recognitions and what message it sends to emerging Canadian talent. Support systems that focus on amplifying both international and local artists equally could foster a healthier entertainment industry. Overall, I believe Canadian entertainment promoters could benefit from balancing their promotion strategies. Celebrating African guest artists brings cultural richness, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of nurturing and highlighting local artists who keep the Canadian arts scene vibrant and growing. A more inclusive approach would ensure fair recognition, encourage diverse talent, and help sustain the industry's growth domestically and internationally.
