Living as a Nigerian immigrant in Canada has taught me firsthand the critical importance of community support and kindness. Many new Nigerians arriving in Canada face significant challenges—from navigating social services to securing stable income and housing. One of the most valuable yet often overlooked resources is timely and honest information shared among fellow Nigerians. I’ve observed that withholding information, whether about government assistance programs like Ontario Works or local community services, not only delays newcomers’ progress but sometimes causes unnecessary hardship. When we choose to share what we know—no matter how small the bit of information—it empowers others to find better solutions for their families. For instance, a friend of mine who recently moved to Ontario was able to access income support simply because a neighbor kindly provided her with information and guidance. This act of kindness made a significant difference in her ability to adjust quickly and focus on building a new life. Unfortunately, sometimes people hesitate to share helpful insights out of fear, prejudice, or misunderstanding. This creates divisions within our community and allows negativity to undermine the unity we desperately need. Witnessing this made me realize how essential it is to foster a culture of cooperation, empathy, and genuine concern for fellow Nigerians. Furthermore, drawing inspiration from other immigrant communities such as the Indians in Canada, who have successfully built tight-knit, supportive networks, we see the power of unity in overcoming challenges. They demonstrate how being inseparable as a community drives progress and opportunity. In my experience, small acts of kindness—like offering someone a phone number to a specialized service or explaining how to apply for health benefits—can have ripple effects beyond what we imagine. They not only create goodwill but also build trust, making newcomers feel welcomed and less isolated. In conclusion, if more of us embraced kindness and chose to share useful information freely, we could collectively elevate the Nigerian community’s quality of life in Canada.
