There’s inadequate funding for people who are struggling with different issues, whether it’s opioid use, homelessness. Libraries across Canada are kind of feeling the impact of having to take on that burden and we’re not always adequately trained or the right people to respond but because libraries are open to everyone, it’s one of the last places everyone can attend, we’re left to respond to all of the issues in our communities. We have inadequate funding to help Canadians, but enough money to send around the world. Disgusting!

... Read moreFrom personal experience volunteering in community centers, I have seen firsthand how public spaces like libraries become vital safe havens for many marginalized individuals struggling with addiction and housing insecurity. Libraries offer more than books—they provide refuge, internet access, and sometimes even a friendly face or listening ear to those in need. However, it’s concerning that staff often lack adequate training and resources to address complex crises such as opioid overdoses or mental health emergencies. The data mentioning over 100 paramedic calls and numerous security incidents underscores the urgency for increased support. Enhanced government funding specifically allocated for training library staff and hiring social workers or outreach specialists could transform libraries into comprehensive support hubs. Investing in harm reduction programs, like providing naloxone kits within libraries, aligns with saving lives while combating stigma toward drug users. Moreover, community collaboration is essential. Partnerships between health agencies, social services, and libraries can create a coordinated response to homelessness and substance use disorders. It’s frustrating to witness adequate funds being directed abroad while local crises deepen at home. Strengthening public spaces that remain universally accessible—like libraries—would help break cycles of addiction and homelessness by offering both immediate aid and long-term resources. Supporting libraries in this role reflects a compassionate, proactive approach to these pressing social challenges.
