The recent security challenges in Plateau State, particularly in Jos and Kagarko, have led to widespread fear and displacement among local communities. The violent incidents, described by witnesses and reports as barbaric and cowardly attacks by gunmen, have left many injured and several fatalities, causing tens of victims to be moved urgently to meet with President Tinubu at the airport for a very brief visit. From a personal perspective, living through similar community crises, I’ve seen how such quick visits by leaders, while symbolically important, often fail to address the deep-rooted issues of insecurity and trauma that residents endure daily. The feelings of neglect and abandonment can result in people fleeing their homes in search of safety, leading to greater displacement and humanitarian concerns. The Plateau and neighboring Kaduna States have long been flashpoints for ethnic and communal violence, exacerbated by insufficient security measures and prolonged tensions over land and resources. This latest surge in violence and the president’s 10-minute attendance reflect the ongoing challenges in implementing effective solutions and rebuilding trust in government protection. Community stakeholders in Jos, including local leaders and veterans like Bayo Onanuga, have called for stronger interventions, more robust security presence, and sustained engagement beyond symbolic visits. Their hope is for concerted government action to stop the cycle of attacks and to provide relief for the displaced. For individuals experiencing such turmoil, support from civil society, emergency aid, and continuous dialogue remain essential. While a presidential visit may raise awareness, what victims and communities need most is comprehensive peacebuilding efforts and long-term stability to prevent further bloodshed and displacement.
