anxious vs avoidant

2025/5/2 Edited to

... Read moreI remember feeling so lost and confused when my partner would suddenly shut down, become distant, or give me the dreaded silent treatment. It felt like a personal attack, and my own anxious attachment would just kick in, making me cling even harder. But, of course, that often just made them pull away further, creating a painful push-pull relationship that left both of us exhausted. It was only when I started learning about attachment styles—specifically the anxious vs. avoidant dynamic—that things began to click. I often wondered, 'why do avoidants pull away?' and 'why do avoidant people pull away?' What I discovered is that for someone with an avoidant attachment style, intense closeness or intimacy can feel like a direct threat to their freedom and independence. The OCR images hinted at this: it's a fear of being consumed, of losing themselves in the relationship. This isn't about not loving you; it's a deep-seated 'fear of not being safe in love' when things get too intimate, a survival strategy often learned in childhood to protect themselves from perceived overwhelm or engulfment. On the flip side, my 'anxious attachment' meant I feared being 'left and unloved.' So, when they pulled away, my instinct was to 'cling tighter,' to chase, trying desperately to bridge the gap and get reassurance. We were both reacting from our core fears. The avoidant would withdraw because they feared losing freedom, and I would pursue because I feared abandonment. This creates the classic 'anxious woman chasing' and 'avoidant man pulling away' scenario depicted in the visuals. So, what do you do when an avoidant pulls away? The hardest lesson for me was to resist the urge to chase. Instead, I learned to give them space, but also to calmly communicate my feelings without demanding an immediate response. It’s about creating safety for both. For myself, I had to work on my own anxious triggers and develop self-soothing techniques, understanding that my worth isn't tied to their proximity. It's about breaking that cycle of anxious chasing and avoidant withdrawing. If you identify with being 'fearful avoidant' or 'dismissive avoidant,' recognizing these patterns is the first step. If you're asking 'how to not be an avoidant,' or how to soothe your anxious side, healing truly 'begins with understanding the underlying fear.' These behaviors are 'survival strategies' we developed early on. Whether you struggle with 'getting too close,' or find yourself constantly in that push-pull dynamic, recognizing these patterns is the first step towards feeling safer and building healthier, more secure relationships. It’s a journey of self-awareness and learning new ways to connect without triggering those old, deep-seated fears.
