Would this comment offend you too?

At a family event with my husband, I had my hair straightened and felt fine about everything until someone in his family said,

“I know you have to be mixed. It’s crazy for a Black girl to have hair that long.”

I was caught off guard and honestly didn’t know how to respond. I don’t like to cause a scene but also that was such an offensive thing to say.

For one, I am mixed — Black, Mexican, & Filipino — but that comment wasn’t about curiosity, it was about a stereotype.

My hair isn’t “long for a Black girl.” It’s long because I take care of it. Period.

It just reminded me how people still say things like this without realizing how offensive and ignorant it sounds.

How would you have handled that situation? Educate, ignore, or call it out?
