Growing up as latchkey kids—often left to care for ourselves after school—we learned to be independent and resourceful early on. Our parents were often busy working, so we became self-reliant, managing chores, homework, and extracurricular activities on our own. This upbringing cultivated a strong sense of responsibility and adaptability. Being dubbed the "sandwich generation" resonates deeply with many of us in Gen X. We frequently find ourselves balancing care for aging parents while supporting our own children, all amidst careers and personal challenges. This multi-generational caregiving role can be overwhelming, leading to burnout and stress, something I’ve experienced personally. Despite these pressures, Gen Xers tend to manage these competing demands with perseverance and practical problem-solving skills. The narrative of "over-functioning adults" mentioned in the original content rings true. Many of us in Gen X continue to push through life's hurdles, often neglecting our own well-being. This survival mode, while initially necessary, can lead to exhaustion over time. Recognizing this, seeking support through resources like webinars and community groups can be beneficial for maintaining mental health and breaking the cycle of constant stress. Ultimately, the resilience of Gen X is a product of their upbringing, life experiences, and the challenges faced in midlife. By embracing self-care and community support, this generation continues to thrive despite the complexities of modern life.
