Troopers Search for Mustang Driver Who Fled After Pushing SUV Into Semi, Causing Fatal Rollover That Killed 34-Year-Old Truck Driver
MANATEE COUNTY, FLORIDA — Southbound Interstate 75 in Manatee County reopened Monday afternoon after a deadly semi-truck crash shut down the highway for about six hours, with Florida Highway Patrol now searching for a driver who left the scene.
The crash happened just before 6:30 a.m. on April 20 near State Road 64. Investigators said a black Ford Mustang was traveling southbound in the left lane when it collided with a Chevy Trailblazer in the center lane.
Semi Overturned Across All Southbound Lanes
According to troopers, the impact pushed the Chevy into the path of a semi-truck. The truck then swerved across all lanes of I-75 southbound and overturned.
The wreck left the semi on its side, partly in the grassy median and stretched across all southbound lanes, creating a full shutdown of the interstate. The roadway reopened around 12:30 p.m.
The semi-truck driver, a 34-year-old man from New Smyrna, was killed in the crash. The driver of the Chevy Trailblazer, a 63-year-old man from Palmetto, suffered minor injuries.
Troopers Searching for Driver Who Fled
Florida Highway Patrol said the Mustang driver briefly stopped after the crash, then fled southbound on I-75.
Troopers are looking for a black Ford Mustang with rear louvers and possibly a stick camera mounted on the rear. The driver was described as a stocky man wearing a gray hoodie.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is being asked to contact the Florida Highway Patrol by texting *FHP (*347) or submitting a tip through Crime Stoppers.
Having lived in Florida for years and witnessed several traffic incidents on busy highways like I-75, I can attest to how quickly dangerous situations can escalate. This recent Manatee County collision highlights the risks when drivers fail to remain at the scene after an accident. It’s especially tragic when a life is lost, such as the 34-year-old semi-truck driver killed in this rollover. From personal experience, I’ve seen how leaving the scene can complicate investigations and delay justice. Law enforcement relies heavily on witness cooperation and accurate descriptions to apprehend suspects. Reports indicate the Mustang involved had distinctive rear louvers and possibly a stick camera mounted on the rear—details that can help the public assist patrol officers. If you live near I-75 or often travel on this route, it’s vital to stay alert and report suspicious vehicles or driving behavior. The Florida Highway Patrol encourages texting *FHP (*347) or using Crime Stoppers tips to aid investigations. As a driver, this serves as a reminder that safety and responsibility on the road can save lives and prevent further tragedies.
