Growing up is realizing that you can’t expect certain things from people.
I always wanted to have a best friend-type relationship with my mom. I literally begged her once to stop treating me the way she was, because I told her it would eventually push me away to the point that I wouldn’t want her in my life. I was just a teenager.
It’s crazy to think how some moms beg their teenage kids to let them in, to build a relationship but I was the one begging mine.
I love my mom, because she’s my mom. But I really wish it could’ve been more.
If I laugh too much, she complains. So I can never really joke around with her. If I try to have a conversation, it somehow bothers her, and she’ll end up complaining about something so small that I did.
What hurts the most is seeing her have a better relationship with my little sister and brother than she ever had with me. And when I bring it up, she says I shouldn’t compare myself to them because they’re younger than me. But she doesn’t realize I’m not comparing my current self to them. I’m comparing me at their age to them now.
But whatever, I’m babbling now.
I’m 26, and it’s finally starting to click: I need to stop chasing the relationship I wish I had with my mom and just accept her for who she is — someone who gave birth to me, and whom I happen to call “mom.”

Many people yearn for a best-friend-like bond with their mothers, but this can sometimes lead to disappointment. Recognizing this can help in reshaping your expectations and emotions towards the relationship. As children grow, they may see their parents' connections with younger siblings and feel a sense of loss or competition. However, it's crucial to approach these feelings with compassion and understanding, both for oneself and the parent. In this way, you learn not only about familial ties but also about healthy interpersonal dynamics and emotional resilience. This acceptance fosters a process of healing and can encourage healthier relationships in the future, whether with family or friends.
